Academic Faces Charge For Misidentifying PM’s Wife Purse

BANGKOK — Commenting on the fashion sense of first ladies and leaders’ wives is a media past time everywhere. Get it wrong in Thailand, however, and one might find themselves in jail, as former Thammasat University rector Charnvit Kasetsiri is discovering.

 

For misidentifying the purse first lady Naraporn Chan-ocha carried at the White House as a brand-name product, Charnvit will be charged with violating the Computer Crime Act, police said Thursday. The act bans spreading false information online, which it describes as “importing false information into a computer system.”

Agreed if your trying to stir trouble like this guy obviously wanted make sure you got your facts right. If your trying to spread hate based on lies your asking for trouble.. and trouble is what he got. 

 

Now that must mean that the Prawit watches were real..  otherwise similar charges could have been laid. 

 

I am all for exposing corruption.. not for lying to stir trouble that is something that happens here often enough already.

The junta PM could have just demand a retraction and an apology from the academic but this too good an opportunity to send a warning shot across the bow to intimidate current surge of critics. Not good idea and only intensify the situation that the junta using strong arm tactics to silence criticisms.

Exactly; the message is clear: attack us and we go after you at full force.

 

Spread some fear under everybody who might consider showing opposition of bring corruption into the light.

 

In a normal country the PM could just make a joke about it, maybe even show the purse and mention where it comes from, and thats it. In Thailand you can expect a lawsuit with inflated claims of trying to stir jnrest, a crackdown on social media, and postponement of elections.

You can only stir trouble if it is already brewing. And punishing people for trying to expose corruption but making a mistake will send clear signals to the next person thinking about exposing corruption.

Sure, trouble is brewing.. but slandering someone with fake evidence is not a good thing to do. If you want to bring someone down make sure your evidence is solid. I have seen in the past too many of these lies enticing people to violence. 

 

I don't like Prayut taking the Thaksin approach but I can understand him if you get slandered you like tot take action. If he does not do anything who knows what is next. I am happy they have exposed Prawit, but if someone is not guilty don't slander them. 

 

There are plenty of "activists" that only want to sow discontent and use lies to do so, i dislike those people. If you can't find real dirt then shut up. 

 

I am not sure how you would feel with false allegations about you in the press.. I certainly would not like it one bit and would strike back legally. So that next time they do due diligence before slandering me again.

If you wont be able to handle some minor false allegations on FB I suggest you should not take over a country by gunpoint and make an a$$ of yourself.

Let's not pretend this is a big issue; it is only an issue because it comes in the news now with the lawsuit (Streisand effect anybody).

 

If he was smart he would laugh about it, maybe even stretch it out a bit further. Then when the media seriously presses him for it he could make a fool of them by bringing the purse and showing it is cheap. Next time they call him out on something he could remark "you sure about this or is this another purse issue?". People would laugh at his joke, he would brush away opposition, and all done with a bit of flair and humor. That how succesful politicians handle it, and how adults would try to handle it. It is small minded people and kids who get angry and start throwing insult and tantrums.

I always thought Thaksin was a successful politician.. he used the defamation laws extensively. This PM is not much different. 

 

But your right your approach would be better but like you said he is not suited for it Prayut is really bad at communications and handeling of the media.

This is the level Thai Politics has to go to get noticed. Most avenues are cut off. But bringing things into the light may also have there consequences. The fact is that the court is controlled by the junta, otherwise Benny and others would have case's to answer. That's how I see Thai politics at the moment.

Politics is a messy game.

The thing is what i dislike about Thai politics are those lies and half truths made to incite the normal folk to do the bidding of the politicians who make them. If its based on facts sure by all means but once you start using lies for it you cross a line (IMHO). That goes for all sides of course.

But in this case, do you think it was a honest mistake or an attempt to spread lies and incite?

 

Its different to tell lies and half truths to an angry mob at a protest while handing out rifles, and to misidentify a purse and make a post about it on your own FB page hoping to be the first one to have seen it and make your claim for a bit of fame.

He was not the first one.. he went on on the post of someone else. So your scenario is flawed. But I understand it. The guy is a known activist so he would love to embarrass the junta. He is not an ordinary person. If you want to do something like that make sure you got your facts straight.. he did not. 

 

It depends a bit how i will view this... if he was not a known activist but just like you said someone wanting to make a bit of fame i would have looked differently at it.
