WARNING: attacked by foreign robber

Featured Replies

I was attacked by a foreigner on Sukhumvit near Asok on Sunday night and wanted to send this warning to anyone that’s reading.

I was walking home on Sukhumvit and was approached by a white male. He was flustered and claimed he had been robbed of 9,000 baht and needed help and proceeded to open his empty wallet. I asked him what had happened and he said a girl from one of the food stands had robbed him. I asked specifically which one and he pointed to one down the block, so I said I would help him identify the person for the police.

He got flustered and said he didn’t want to. I said he needs to be specific if he is going to get his money back; which caused him to get aggressive and accuse me of calling him a liar. The next thing I know, I was on the ground surrounded by a crowd – he had hit me out of nowhere. He appeared to have tried to flee and seemed to have been accosted by the crowd. I was badly injured in my face and was rushed to the hospital, and received 27 stitches to my forehead and around my eye.

If this person approaches you and you speak Thai, I suggest (discreetly) trying to report him to the police because I am told this has happened before. Here is my description of him as far as I can remember:

-          White male, about mid-20s. Dark blonde, short hair that is wavy at the top and short on the sides.

-          About 5’11 in height, slim build. In his appearance, he reminded me of the kid from the show ‘Breaking Bad’, albeit with more conservative clothing

-          Normally dressed

-          American accent – possibly California

-          He is almost certainly left handed

If any stranger approaches you - ignore them and continue with your business.

They're often up to no good and they tend to strike when you're distracted.

What did he steal from you?

Nothing -- he didn't get anything. He hit me, and I went to the ground. I assume he tried to get away because the next thing I remember is he was about 20 feet away on the ground surrounded by people.

I don't know why he bothered hitting me, rather than just giving up and leaving.

That's what happened -- do with it what you will.

What are the police doing about it?

It could be one of the disgruntled thaivisa BMs

"It's just that you called him a robber in the title."

Fair enough -- perhaps 'attacker' is more accurate.

I should report it to the police to get it filed.

Definately report and the CCTV may lead police to at least have a look of the fellow.

Nowhere in the world is safe nowadays it’s sad that you cannot walk down the street without the worry that someone will abuse or be violent against you. Hope your okay dude 20 odd stitches did he have a nuckle duster or bit of pipe in his hand because to cause that with one blow is alarming

A pic of the  stitches?  Just to give some more credit to your story ...

Is this suggestion for when in a strange country.....or a general principle in life, that if people approach you with an enquiery or for some sort of assistance....you should completely ignore them?

If the latter, then I'm glad I have  never experienced living in such a world  ......NOR WOULD I EVER WISH TO.

Enjoying his retirement ?

I hate violence, I hope they get the guy. Seems like a lot of damage for just one blow.

I think its sensible advice, whether in your home country or in a different country; whether new to that country or experienced.

Sadly we live in a world full of deceitful, thieving, scamming criminals, some of whom are quite willing and capable of employing violence. Add to that the crazies and those fueled by drugs, including the readily available alcohol and you've plenty to be cautious about.

Situational awareness, caution and taking care - sensible advice. But that doesn't mean that having considered things that you shouldn't offer assistance to those genuinely in need.

I've offered help to people who've needed it. Some are grateful and others shy away if they're nervous of accepting help or too much help, as is their choice.

Bottom line, it's a rum old world we live in. Take care.

Or just take him at his word as he has nothing to gain by telling tall tales...

OP: Thanks for the warning...  a reminder to be vigilant is never going hurt anyone.

Sorry to hear. You need to be more careful on the jump too.  Safe recovery, 27 stiches is a bottle to the face? Yikes

Maybe so, but Thailand boards seem to attract a lot of fantasist with attention seeking behaviour, making up all sorts of nonsense.

The description sounds very much like the POS I seen in soi nana, not once, but twice he came up to me,asked where I was from, wanted some money as he said he'd been robbed of wallet, passport everything, but later saw the same POS rear of Mike's here in Pattaya.

You said he was on the ground surrounded by Thais......what happened to him then?

Here are the medical records (not well written records albeit) ... I hope this puts it to rest.

I don’t know what happened to him. I intend to go back there and ask some of the vendors. There were loads of witnesses.

An inaccurate comment on moderation and the reply has been removed.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

FWIW , we were walking past asok /suk junction last night , little tent with a few police and a soldier positioned there , maybe as a result of the incident ?
