Image: Screengrab / YouTube PHUKET: A member of the Phuket Public Prosecutor’s office has today (Jan 30) confirmed to The Phuket News that British national Danny Glass has been handed an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and fined B15,000 for the death of his girlfriend following a motorbike accident on May 8 last year. It was confirmed that Glass’s sentence was handed down last Thursday (Jan 25), but that the case for the driver of the truck involved in the accident is still ongoing as he has denied the charge brought against him. Phuket Public Prosecutor Boontob Lanthong told The Phuket News today, “Glass admitted the charge of reckless driving causing death during his trial held on Jan 25. Also, I wonder how with a suspended sentence he could get a visa to stay. The penalty seems reasonable in that if he swerved he was probably going a little too fast to have full control of the bike. Yes, it was an accident but it was probably preventable with foresight. His idiotic, irresponsible behavior may be attributable to his upbringing back in farangland, but shifting the blame onto "here," i.e. Thailand, is just another lame attempt to imply that Thailand is to blame for the behavior of every farang moron who can cobble together airfare to Thailand. Skimming through the longer article, I didn't see any mention of him expressing grief or remorse, only that he wanted to put it all behind him and start a new chapter. No, but he was involved in an accident. If he had accepted he would have gotten a 500 or 1,000 baht fine, end of story. He did not want to do that and plead not guilty, so now probably end up with something similar but a lot more trouble. He may even be acquitted, but was it worth the trouble? richard_smith237 Posted January 30, 2018 Share Posted January 30, 2018 Had he been handed out a far more severe penalty there would be a number of posters claiming double standards and they would be right, this is not an example of double standards, it appears that Danny Glass has been fortunate enough to be dealt with the same level of lenient indifference as regular Thai folk who are considered guilty of similar levels of carelessness on Thailands roads. Unrelated to the OP, but in direct answer to your question: when I see how parents transport their babies on the road, then I am indeed tempted to answer "yes"... though I know they must love them as much as we do.
