Just to add to what Jsixpack wrote on that subject:

Many people, particularly some older posters, had a good education where they learned how to write, this before the days of the computer et al. Such posters are therefore not limited to single monosyllable words and three-word answers.

Whilst there may be a modicum of verity in what you purport, unfortunately the trend is in the opposite direction.  Shorty, pithy, and punchy messages like Twitter are the way of the world now.  The trend is your friend, so don't fight it and go with the flow!

Using words such as modicum and pithy don't prove an education, it's a bit like using old English in a post, methinks etc, as if to prove literacy, people can see through it at a glance.

It's all in the education, fifteen minutes to look up a suitable phrase doesn't cut the mustard I'm sorry to say.

Sure, as you are so impressed by your own supposed qualifications, why not  describe them here, so we can make an assessment for ourselves. Peer review is the ultimate reality check!  However, if it takes you 15 minutes to find a phrase that most people can rattle off(or look up) in a few seconds, then I am afraid that you do not impress me much....sorry to break it to you so bluntly, Mr. Education man.

Only a rank noob would make that mistake. If TVF Hive Mind agrees w/ you, no qualifications whatsoever are needed. Your cat might as well be walking on your keyboard long as it hits "brown envelope" or "rubbish" or one of the other words listed in my previous post. Wise, approving nods and likes!  If NOT :shock1:, then the chorus of sneers over the "qualifications" will fill a few pages. However, I laugh as well when the poster resorts to some spurious claim of "it IS, 'cause my qualifications say so." That usually means the poster is losing the argument for one reason or another. Had a good example recently when a poster cited engineering degrees and fluid mechanics and structural mechanics knowledge to defend a lost cause.

Great. Real keyboard ready? So then we'll expect much longer in-depth posts from you expressing balanced, objective, and rational views. You'll be disagreeing w/ the bigoted nonsense, pointing out good aspects of Pattaya, relating pleasant interactions with Thais, pointing out that Chinese do spend a lot, revealing you have no problems w/ Soi Buakhao and like it as it is, and laughing at the bashes, whinges, hate, and dire prophecies, refuting w/ logic and history. The Hive will strike back w/ personal attacks for daring challenge the narrative of TVF Pattaya:

And the measure of your success in joining the enlightened band of independent thinkers will be the number of personal attacks you can garner. If you can achieve the coveted opprobrium of Real Estate Agent, then you're in Nobel Prize territory. Condo owner isn't too bad, as forum dogma (promulgated by renters) holds that all owners are desperate to sell because everyone's heading for the exits! (I love this forum!)

So I'll provide you with one little armament to counter the rose-tinted glasses you'll receive:

Exactly. So when you're told by the naysayers to "take off those rose colored glasses," complete with cute image, you merely tell them to "take off their smoke colored glasses" and post this one. :smile:The average mental age on the forum is about 14, you see.

That said, I've noticed we do seem to have more positive posters on the forum in the past few months than previously. Hope that's the start of a trend.

Now, isn't it great day to be here in our cesspool? Sun's out, the daytime go-gos are open, pretty women are on the streets, and the view's great, 'cept for a bit of fairly normal haze. Time to hit Soi Buakhao for a pint and watch the circus. Hua Hin??? Pffft!

Well, I did report your post as off topic but as it wasn't deleted guess I'll need to respond.

JSixpack be da man, baby. Don't be forgettin' it, neither.

All them Whither Pattaya and Whither Thailand space monkeys and nitpicks that plague, or merely seem to plague (try suggesting raising visa fees to help pay for improvements!), our forum snowflakes don't bother me, true. I also see the good aspects of living here that far outweigh the bad.

In fact I think the vast majority of countless expats living in Thailand or in our cesspool are happy enough. They merely aren't bothering to post on the forum, leaving it to the infestation of whingers, cynics, and rabid bashers. So it becomes a target-rich echo chamber. For every basher, remember there are a thousand Brits living in council estates dreaming of how they might live here permanently.

My interactions with Thais are almost always pleasant (had fun just today joking around w/ some lovely nurses) merely because I learned years ago how to push the right buttons to make them so. Arrogance, self-importance, and provincialism are at the root of much discontent among farang community here and have led in part to the attitude from Pattaya Thais so often denounced on the forum. Other stuff, nothing to be done about it anyway, not my business, and I've just never needed to get attention by whinging or to feel superior by bashing. I have a comfortable life. You might review The Serenity Prayer.

From my Profile:

Q: Why are you posting?

A: To be helpful when possible. Otherwise, to correct bias and nonsense while having a good laugh via satire. I've found satire about the only hope of changing any minds around here--facts, logic, and a rational perspective are pretty much useless. I like making fun of posts by our whingers, know-it-alls, blowhards, ace experts in every field (esp economics), tea money choristers, bigots, and of course doomsayers. In the course of which, by acting as troll bait, I try to help rid the forum of trolls--and sometimes succeed. Endless supply of 'em though.

There aren't many members posting balanced, rational, objective views. We

  • live and let live,
  • accept the unchangeable,
  • handle problems routinely,
  • interact with Thais well, and simply
  • roll with the flow,

unfazed by the mess and paradox one may naturally expect to encounter in a Third World country. Since we're pretty happy living in Thailand, we're often labeled wearers of rose-tinted classes, Thai apologists with heads in the sand, and the worst term of opprobrium known to any TVF Poster: real estate agents!

Underlying the good laugh is the presentation of an opportunity for the miserable to consider whether there might be another way of looking at things, and of interacting with the people of this culture, to be happier and overcome the pathetic need to whinge and bash.

Or, just leave and be happy, as you are moving to the paradise of Hua Hin. I heartily approve; wasn't my post helpful? The dire future of Pattaya and of farangs in Thailand has already been depicted, graphically, on THIS forum to your complete and utter satisfaction. Besides this, the TV forum posters' sage, street-smart three Primal Laws Of Survival In Thailand are enshrined as gospel.

And I've previously introduced an old whinger to the paradise of The Villages; he soon disappeared. Lots of helpful threads on the forum about moving back to the UK. Hart in Hampshire looks lovely, no cesspool that: Best places to live in the UK: Hart in Hampshire tops list for the fifth year in a row. Here's a glowing report on moving back to Walmart Country: Why are you still in Thailand? Thai wife loves it there. More: USA -- low budget repatriation specific locations that aren't horrible. Why wait? Enough with the excuses!

Well said. The critics are often parochial and have had limited travel and life experiences.  They were explained to me as 'Postman Pats from Perth'. Not too bright-shrinking pension- and little or no understanding of Asian culture all underpinned by a sense of self importance. I further believe many whiners have not been to Thailand or Pattaya and some are right wing evangelicals and extreme  feminists who have infiltrated this forum.

If you can't last more than a month in Pattaya you won't last more than a week in Hua Hin.

Unless a beach destination is a must, give Chiang Mai a try.

Yeah you'll love the pollution and bars closing at 11pm.

If bars and hookers are an important part of your lifestyle here, how can you possibly attack the decline of Thai/farang relationships overall, mostly on the basis of those two things - and if Pattaya and tourist destinations are your sole focus, why not consider the opposite, non-tourist denominated locations, you seem to have existed in a microcosom of the real Thailand, and arguably the seediest part at that!

Is Hua Hin going to be any different for you.....I doubt it, it sounds like it's your attitude that needs to change.

People tend to carry their emotional baggage with them.

@swissie

I don't really understand why you care if get a Thai smile as you say it is not genuine anyway.  I don't really care if random bank tellers or strangers smile at me.  If it is people that actually know you that don't give you the Thai smile then the issue may be with you.

If one is going to use quotes as a response one should at least get them right

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks." was the original, but to use on here one would need to change it to "Thou doth protest too much, methinks."

:sorry:
