the wife and i ride a bike every morning now for years 

you can see now the street dogs have breed   like rats

the local people take out food every day to them and they keep on breeding

one area we go through  you have to go slow and weave through them

a temple nearby  would have to be 25dogs hanging around 

why don't the govt have a program to stop it

the worst of it is when they shit every where. it dries and the cars run over it 

the wind blows and puts it into the air 

now you know why you get a sore throat

bring in some vietnamese workers and the issue shall solve

The government can't keep tabs on their ministers, so don't be holding out any hope on the street dog issue. They have as much right (if not more) to be here than you or I.

Why stop feeding them?  Let them starve to death?

Didnt he also mention previously problems in Malaysia as well....maybe trouble follows him wherever he goes?

My ex-wife use to befriend stray cats and dogs in Thailand and then take them to a vet to get fixed.  It did not cost that much. 

 

The current government could not organize a sock drawer.  If you had a beach chair problem, they would have it sorted in no time.

Exactly. The dogs aren't to blame for some humans dumping them on the street and being left to breed unchecked and to forage for themselves. Suggesting that they all be starved to death as a solution is the same sort of inhuman thinking that created the problem in the first place.

To be fair, in western countries much of the work done for the rescue and care of abandoned animals is left to private organizations dependent on donations and maybe a little government funding.

No they are not but it does not change the fact they are the scourge of Thailand ( won't help the woman from Surin that died from rabies after being infected by one, after feeding them)

As a dog lover i am the first to admit that Thailand needs a nationwide cull to be instigated and all owners made to pay for a licence to stop the infestation getting back to epidemic proportions (maybe a bit over the top and impossible to implement)

Alternatively a government scheme to  have all females spayed free of charge

Me too, over the years we have befriended countless soi dogs and had many of them operated on, both male and female. We also support a dog rescue centre near Thap Sakae, a woman who almost single handedly takes care of around 200 dogs. Should anyone like to know more about this woman please DM me

I really don't think that it is unreasonable to be able to walk or cycle the streets without the worry of being bitten. Your post just shows the mentallity of some 'dog lovers' No its not the dogs fault, its the dog owners fault who dump them on the street to pester, bite and foul the roads and paths, but the dogs should be removed. Some dogs have bigger brains than dog lovers.

Dogs don't bother me, I have a dog, but he never bothers other people, he is under our control all the time as indeed all should be. So are you saying that Thailand doesn't have a dog problem, are you saying there are not too many dogs causing problems on the streets. BTW they are rhetorical questions, I do know the answer.

But you saying "dogs don't bother me" is quite a selfish remark as dogs do bother other people including children.

I've been here a good while and but for a few times, have not seen dogs bothering people.

 

In the US, they round up strays and kill them, is that better?

 

A long list of thing that concern me more than stray dog.

 

How come no one complains about the stray birds? would much rather have stray dogs than birds, at least the dogs just sh*t on the ground.

 

 

I take care of 40 dogs  in various  locations , FEED them everyday they've gotten their shots and yes we fixed as many as we can get close to and trust us. The key is get them fixed but  expats want to complain rather than to resolve the problem head on or get together with other people and do it as a group.

Yes 100%   round them up and give the "not" owners a chance to come and claim them  pay some fines and get a stern talking to about responsible ownership...if no owner or new owner wants to adopt it then it should be humanely put to sleep...not left to roam around causing mayhem and disease.

The problem is caused by humans and then exacerbated.....by humans.

 

I don't like the fact that some locals feed the legions of cats here but at least their hearts are in the right place. The cold view would be don't feed them, let them hunt for themselves (keep the rats in check & WHY) and food levels will adjust their numbers as nature intended. Unfortunately us humans have already messed up natures ways so it's only us to blame. Add to that a skewed view, I for example, do have this cold view to cats but not to dogs, "awwwww da pwiddy leeedle puppy", which is grossly unfair of course and unhelpful.

Some people take it on themselves to help and neuter these animals in a small effort to genuinely help. I have just donated to one such person in order to continue/increase their efforts, I don't have the heart to do it myself but am happy to encourage those who do.

Come on OP, it's not the animals fault but there are ways we can all help the situation.

 You and your wife have been riding your bikes around in Thailand for years. So, simple question OP. Have any of these dogs ever harmed you?

I'm a keen walker and stride out for at least an hour every day in and around our village. There are dogs everywhere and yet, apart from a bit of barking here and there, I get no problems from them at all. In fact many greet me with a friendly tail wag and I'm quite sure it's all down to my none aggressive and patient posturing. And I do not get sore throats!

 

And interestingly, I do not recall ever coming home with dog poo on my shoe, which is more than I can say for the UK!

 

I suggest you should learn to live more in harmony with your environment OP. 'Cause you can be sure it ain't going to change any time soon.

Your outrage is understandable.   The real problem is breading.   Those who sell animals should offer chipping and sterilization with the price of the animal.  That is where a healthy, functioning government could do some good. 

 

But look at Thailand, seriously.  Look at all the crap that just gets tossed into the water.  Was on a klong boat last year.  Saw this beautiful woman setting down and eating next to the klong.  She gently, and, with great poise, floats a plastic bag towards the klong.  Vile yet elegant the gentle float klong-word should have been set to an operatic aria.  

 

Taiwan no longer puts down pets, which is in of itself amazing.  There was once, and, might still be, a serious problem, but at least they are engaged with the issues. 

i prefer dogs to cyclists

at least they don't have a constant chip on their shoulder
