webfact
PM acknowledges report of Thailand being world’s happiest economy BANGKOK, 19th February 2018 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is pleased with the latest report that Thailand is ranked the world’s least miserable economy this year for the fourth consecutive year. Conveying Gen Prayut’s messages, Government Spokesperson Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the prime minister is happy with the latest ranking of Thailand in Bloomberg’s Misery Index 2018 which indicated that Thailand is the happiest economy among 66 countries surveyed. The index takes into consideration inflation and unemployment rates which Bloomberg believes generally illustrate how good an economy’s residents feel about life. Thailand this year scored 2.5, thanks to low inflation and the low unemployment rate. Lt Gen Sansern said the survey coincides with a central bank report that Thailand’s inflation rate stands at 0.66% and the unemployment rate is as low as 1.3%. The spokesperson attributed these figures to the government’s economic measures, resulting in the stabilization of the grassroots economy and an improvement in people’s living standards. Bloomberg ranked Singapore, Japan, Switzerland, and Taiwan among the happiest after Thailand, and ranked Venezuela the most miserable economy 4 years in a row. -- nnt 2018-02-19

Popular Post ezzra
There're 195 countries in the world, and only 66 were in the survey, so in one third countries Thailand is the least miserable, i'm sure that there're many others that will dispute the fact, but who are we to stand in the way of the PM happiness?... 2 1
Popular Post cornishcarlos
A quote directly from the report "Thailand again claimed “least miserable” status," "Least miserable" is a big difference from "happiest economy"... 17 3

Given the fact it appears to be almost impossible to be registered unemployed in Thailand the ranking is meaningless. But now the PM has restored happiness to the Thai people he can hold a free election knowing the public will thank him by electing him. 6 1 1

Popular Post PREM-R
Usually, when a report about Thailand is from an external source there is immediately a statement from 'government' that the figures used are " out of date, incorrect and do not reflect the current position." I wonder if these figures will be contested? 3 2
Popular Post canuckamuck
The employment figures are skewed because the 150 people that greet you when you enter a store like Home Pro haven't worked a day in their lives, this same is true for 75% of the people crammed behind the cashiers counter in nearly every shop. 1

Popular Post yellowboat
There is plenty of work if you do not mind toiling for 6-7 days a week at low wages. Where does the average Thai benefit ? It is a bonanza for the wealthy as always. I don't a trickle down. Popular Post Eric Loh
What was conveniently left out by Sansern was that Bloomberg’s caveat that “Thailand has an unique method to calculate unemployment”. I think low inflation meant low demand and that is not necessary good. The retail sectors are hurting from poor sales. I interpret that as “miserable”. 6

I think Bloomberg rely on figures supplied by the government and the Thai banks. More likely it is those figures that are in a twist and suspect. And I think Bloomberg knows that. They said in a report a few months ago that "Thailand's jobless rate was unusually low". Bloomberg also said: "Thailand has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world, which doesn’t always fit the picture of an emerging-market economy that’s struggling to get growth going". https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-12-05/-big-data-tells-thailand-more-about-jobs-than-low-unemployment 2

Popular Post KiChakayan
Back in civilized, countries unemployment is defined, amongst other criteria, by a minimum monthly activity time. For instance you not counted as unemployed if you worked more than 5 or 10 days in any give month. Guess that for Thailand this threshold must be 10 minutes. 1
