There will be other inmates in plain clothing arrested for possession, drunk driving etc. Tell him not to worry. If he pleads guilty he doesn't have to see the inside of the court room. The confession will be all in Thai script so good idea to ask someone to translate for him. He will need some money to pay his fine and will be realesed around 4pm, he can pick up his passport after he pays his fine in the reception.
