BANGKOK, 26 February 2018 (NNT) – The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) will retract its order banning political activities in June, paving the way for municipal elections nationwide.

Deputy Prime Minister for legal affairs Wissanu Krea-ngam has disclosed that the NCPO is likely to unlock more restrictions on political activities this June, so as to allow responsible organizations to prepare for local elections. Once all election bills have become law, political parties will be allowed to launch their campaigns.

The deputy PM declined to confirm that municipal elections would take place in August as suggested by Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, but is confident that local polls will be held this year.

Late last year the NCPO decided to lift bans on certain political activities, allowing political parties to update their status and membership lists. However, political gatherings of more than five people are still prohibited.

In the meantime, the electoral body this week endorsed the draft law governing local and provincial elections, which will be forwarded to the cabinet for approval this February 28th.

Expect a delay that has nothing to do with the beloved PM end of May !
