BANGKOK — The foreign affairs ministry on Monday handed a formal protest to the Gambian government after one of its minister reportedly suggested tourists looking for sex should go to Thailand.

Thai diplomats in Senegal, whose jurisdiction covers The Gambia, filed a letter expressing “displeasure” at the alleged remark made by Gambia’s tourism minister Hamat Bah, which went viral on Thai social media, foreign affairs spokeswoman Makawadee Sumitmor told reporters Monday.

"(Gambian) Culture minister Veera Rojpojchanarat suggested sex tourism used to be prevalent but has since dropped because of the country’s focus on “morality.” "...lol

Well its difficult to have a' sex tourism' industry if all the tourists stop coming to your country because :

1. your crackpot dictator says they don't need them and the west is the cause of all their problems,

2. you follow this with an election where the sitting dictator of 22 years refuses to step down bring the country to the bring of civil war.

.....yes sounds a lovely place to relax.

At first, when I read point number 1, I thought you were referring to you know who.  Also with point number 2 until you mentioned the 22 years instead of just 4, although it does seem a bit like 22 years.

We want "outrage", "displeasure" just doesn't cut it. Other than that, pretty fast response...

I strongly recommend to the FM to organize a staff group tour to visit Pattaya, Bangla Road in Phuket, Loykroh Road in Chiang Mai, Nana Plaza, Patpong, Soi Cowboy, the "massage" parlors along Ratchadapisek and New Petchburi Roads and pretty much every other tourist spot in the country... and then consider again whether such a "formal protest" should actually have been handed over at all.

Ah, the wretched truth. No Thai can handle it.

And then consider the scene for locals is bigger than all the above mentioned combined, and is available in every country around the world. It's never going away.

Since when could any politician from West Africa have the right to claim the moral high ground!!

I can think of a kitchen euphemism but might get crucified by the PC crown so I'll just stick with 'people in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones!"

Think that you have totally missed the point. It's about Thailand's denial

Well spoken Sir. Why don't they just shut up and enjoy the massive revenue that comes this way. Not deny it. Not condone it openly. Just ignore it

You seem to have a hands on knowledge of these sexual stomping grounds perhaps you might give a financial services analysis also in the interest of tourism of course.
