NCPO to allow new political parties to start activities ahead of registration

BANGKOK, 28th February 2018 (NNT) – The National Council for Peace and Order plans to allow new political parties to begin some activities in preparation for their registration next month.

Prime Minister and chief of the NCPO, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday offered his appreciation to veteran politician and leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee for the plan to set up a new political party to support him.

While he had no objection to the offer, the PM stated that Mr. Suthep will still have to abide by the law and refrain from turning the issue into a new round of political conflict.

Meanwhile, Gen. Prayut said that new political parties, which will be permitted to complete their registration with the Election Commission on March 1, and will also be allowed to hold meetings, while existing parties will be able to do so from April 1.

He added that representatives of all political parties will be invited to a meeting with the Four Rivers, which are recognized as the National Legislative Assembly, the Cabinet, the Constitutional Drafting Commission and the NCPO, to discuss the date of a general election, which must take place before February 2019.

Question. If PDRC leaders set up a new political party without Suthep ( that’s what he said) and he seem to be giving advise and setting the agenda to support Prayut, will that be unlawful under the new constitution? He sure is influencing and dictating the policies. He probably retain that special legal privileges being a junta crony.

How is it fair that new parties get a 30 day jump on old ones?  PTP is always in the news, so they are fine, but those yellows are in sad shape.  Can't feel too sorry for them as they were the architects of the last four years of buffoonery.

Khun Prayut Chan O Cha complaining about the sex trade with foreigners is the lasted mind numbingly stupid comment.   Thais use it and profit from it the most, and they do not have a problem with it.  Just something wet blanket hi-so's would say.

Sounds just the sort of meeting that, if anyone is foolish enough to enter, they will never get out alive. You gotta hand it to Wasasquadi Nowapoli . . . he has every angle covered.

I'm again confused. What Election Commission?

  • The term for the existing membership expired as per the Constitution. NLA said they can still remain.
  • But then the NLA EC Selection Committee developed new EC qualifications as per the 2017 Constitution that disqualified existing membership.
  • Then after the Selection Committee nominated seven new replacement EC candidates, none were endorsed by the NLA.
  • The Selection Committee must again select new candidates for NLA endorsement but they cannot be the same ones previously nominated by the Selection Commission.

Meanwhile a petition was filed with the Constitution Court (?) that the existing EC members cannot continue in office because that would be unconstitutional.

So it seems that there shouldn't be now an Election Commission if the Constitution is followed.
