The country is lottery mad. You could be in a middle of what is meant to be an 'important' meeting and the meeting will break to discuss the lottery. Many Thai will even plan their lives and buy expensive things like cars on the belief they will actually receive lottery money like they do a paycheck.

Father-in-law doesn't drink or smoke, but does spend 8,000 baht a month on the lottery. He reckons he has a system, I obviously think it is complete rubbish but he does seem to win every third time or so. The wife used to buy the odd ticket, but does not play it anymore. Mother-in-law also refuses to play.

The woman who blessed our Buddhist artifact thing in the front of our house suggested numbers to him, he didn't win so said he would never trust things like that again. But yes, people go off silly things like dreams, car license plates, house numbers etc, and then call all their friends to choose these numbers.

I guess it either gives people something to do/talk about, and others a lot of hope their lives will improve...also the gambling aspect for many.

"our Buddhist artifact thing in the front of our house "..Seriously?  You live here and don't know what it is called? Spirit house? Shrine?  Statue? What do you call that white wet grainy stuff people eat here?

I really couldn't care less what it is called. The fact you understood and used similar words that could fit into the word I used anyway shows it was a bit of a pointless quote. Not to mention, irrelevant.

Never met a Thai who could resist the lure of easy money. And the easier the better.

I blame the drinking water as the same disease seems to afflict many farangs who end up here.

Ha, ha, ha, I love this drinking water theory. I have yet to find drinking water that I like in Thailand come to think of it. They don't taste good. They don't have the technical know how? Can someone tell me a good brand (of drinking water )? No, no, not Evian or imported stuff.

Least they don't have Scratch Cards.....

I think Farangistan has a bigger addiction to the Lottery than here.

Farangs prefer "alternative-lotteries". = Stock market, commodities, currencies, Bitcoins etc.
When we win, our friends call us respectfully "successful investors".
When we lose, our friends call us disrespectfully "damm speculators" that get what they deserve.
Us Farangs get their "lucky numbers" by reading The Wall Street Journal.
- I don't know what pruduces better "lucky numbers" in the long run, reading The Wall Street Journal or consulting with a senior monk at the local Thai-temple.
Cheers.

120-130 is obviously the "farang" (or wife of farang) price ;)

Most sellers will ask for 100THB per ticket, but that means the price is negotiable.

But there are places where tickets are sold for 80THB, they even have signs "ticket just 80THB", there you don't have to negotiate, 80THB is the price.

And there is a law with quite hefty fines which says that a ticket may not be sold for more than 80THB. You should of course not threaten the seller with it (always a risk to get beaten up or stabbed in Thailand), but mentioning that you know that it exists can help in paying 80THB instead of 100THB

"Tickets are sold for 80THB"..............you are correct 80 baht for one by one, piece by piece, any more than that, they start asking for 100, 110, 120, 130 and up for 'full monty'  10 or 15, 20 or 30 pieces, remember the guy that won 180 Million, he had 30 tickets of the same number, there is an underground 'auction' of groups of tickets we will never see as foreigners.   you said:

"120-130 is obviously the "farang" (or wife of farang) price"  obviously you have never dealt with serious lottery traders, it is the same for everyone, the man mentioned above???  he paid, 5,000 baht for all 30 of them and he is a Thai Man. The traders are charging you for the work of putting together the lots of numbers you want........... OH!!!  You didn't know you can order your numbers???   Guess you don't know as much as you think.   I spend 8-15,000 baht a month on tickets, and very rarely buy them on the street and now I am playing with the Govts money - figure that one out.     Peace.

6 digits, man, 6...not 3!

Try 314159...

I like to play for the 3 digit numbers - its more interesting - and you get 4000 baht for each winning number.

Afaik they earn 10THB per ticket sold (at 80THB, if they sell it for more they obviously pocket the difference)

Thats why some of them have "80 Baht only"  and another sign  "Tips ar accepted"  they will point to the 'tips' sign and smile  (they are law abiding).  I know about 30 lottery traders in Bangkok, they know me by face and my favorite numbers, its a really friendly group when you go to the right neighborhoods..........not Lower Sukumvitt.

I had a girlfriend. After only four days of giving up my previous life and moving 1400 kms to move in with her, she came home and told me she had lost B20,000 (not my money) on the lottery. I paid her Creditor and after promising she would never do such a thing again, I forgave her.

She continued to gamble, without even thinking of stopping and 4 months later, she came home in tears one day and after some persuasion she told me she had lost B500,000 and her Creditor wanted it NOW.

To cut a long story short I decided I had had enough and tried to make plans to leave. I was with her another six months before I eventually managed to get away and during all that time, I amassed ample evidence that she was still doing the dirty  with the Lottery.

I would never have anything to do with a woman who has tattoes, smokes cigarettes, and especially one who gambles. It is a really the most ugly and pathetic stupid addiction. You always lose. Not with my goddamn money especially!

Not that I have never gambled. Go to any Casino in Reno or Las Vegas, the worlds most expensive “free drinks”. California Super Lotto, I buy them once or twice a year, don’t actually expect to win 145million dollars. You have a better odds to be struck by lightning.
