webfact Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 Govt confirms commitment to resolving IUU fishing BANGKOK, 13th March 2018 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs has confirmed that efforts to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Thailand's waters are ongoing, as the government remains committed to raising the standards of Thai fishing operations. During its latest meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, the national administration reform steering committee discussed the IUU fishing problem in the country. The panel acknowledged that the government is dealing with the problem of 415 fishing boats which were found to have no identified owner and has issued arrest warrants for owners of another 150 vessels that have no licenses. The committee was also informed by the government of its intention to intensify the monitoring of all fishing vessels entering and leaving Thai waters, along with verification of the origins of their marine catch, as well as increased law enforcement in the fishing industry. On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit instructed all related units to perform their duties with stringent regard for the law, and place a priority on lifting the standards of Thai marine exports in a bid to ensure their acceptance by the international community. He also insisted that human trafficking and forced labor must not occur in the Thai fishing sector. -- nnt 2018-03-13

mtls2005 Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 Three ATMs installed for those Burmese deck-hands not thrown overboard. Job done. Seriously, all the sea-life will be long gone by the time they "resolve" these issues. 2
Lungstib Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 There is and always will be a massive gulf between Thailands idea of whats legal and the EU's idea of the same. There is little chance of them ever coming down to the same thing. 2

RichardColeman Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Don't know why they are so worried about the coral dying. Seems like they are eating all the wildlife in the sea anyway. 1

Are you telling me that someone in government was lying ????? No declaration yet. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, Gen Chatchai Sarikulya, is planning to propose that Thailand announce itself as free from illegal fishing activities. March 31st may be the target date when issuance of new fishing boat licenses will begin. (2018-02-14) https://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/1024972-thailand-to-announce-itself-free-of-iuu-fishing/ But with the government's intended treatment of 415 fishing boats which were found to have no identified owner and owners of another 150 vessels that have no licenses, it might now make such a declaration. Whether that will satisfy the EU is still questionable I believe because the issue of unregistered fishing boat foreign workers (aka slaves) has not been resolved.

You are right, Cornishcarlos - they DID proclaim that fishing was now free of these bad practices - I distinctly remember (like you) reading that article here on Thaivisa. But the junta mob just make up stuff as they go along - it bears no relation to reality whatsoever ... 3
