Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has submitted his fourth written clarification about his expensive wristwatches to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

A well-informed source said that the deputy prime minister had assigned one of his officials to hand over his written clarification to the NACC Thursday afternoon (March 15), Post Today reported.

His clarification was the fourth one as demanded by the NACC, which set March 15 as the deadline to submit the clarification. NACC secretary-general Worawit Sukboon admitted that he had received the written clarification but was yet to look at it in details whether they were sufficient or not.

Prawit sends explanation on luxury watches to NACC

Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan on Thursday submitted his fourth clarification letter to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) regarding his ownership of 25 luxury watches.

NACC secretary-general Worawit Sukboon said he had learned from officials that Prawit had submitted the letter to the NACC, meeting the deadline on the last day. The NACC needed to look into the details of the letter before proceeding with the issue, he said.

There were reports earlier that Prawit would seek more time for his explanation.

The NACC panel appointed to handle the issue was reportedly split over whether it should ask Prawit to give an explanation in person.

Some members of the panel thought this would help facilitate an investigation, as panel members could ask him what they wished to know and “finish the matter”. Other members reportedly argued the time was not right.

The issue has dragged on for months since it was first exposed last December. At that time, Prawit was seen wearing what appeared to be a silver-and-black Richard Mille watch and a diamond ring during a group photo when the reshuffled Cabinet was photographed at Government House.

Since then, people have examined other pictures and spotted up to 25 other expensive watches on his wrist on various occasions.

As a result, he has been accused of failing to report his assets to the NACC as required by law and of possessing “unusual wealth”.

After the issue was exposed online and in the media, the NACC launched an inquiry into the matter.

to me this is tantamount to an admission of guilt; if by some miracle, he is 'innocent', then he would want to clear this up quickly; he is clearly counting on the public's short attention span

I would like to see the procrastination continue to remind the people of military corruption and the dysfunctional NACC. He can also continue to stay and remain a negative talking point. Just hope all this leads up to the removal of the corrupt NCPO.

I fully agree.

However, you also need to get rid of the NACC; they are every bit a part of the problem as the NCPO. Few things hurt the cause of Justice more than an incompetent and non-neutral law agency.

Fire all the NACC commissioners. Today.

Give me three months to come up with an excuse for anything I have done wrong, and find a bunch of cronies to back my bullshit up, and I too could probably talk my way out of just about anything. Total bullshit cover up and anyone with more than a dozen functioning brain cells knows it. The lies will save face though and that is all this place cares about.

Bullshit baffles brains.

Good bullshit does, yes. However these nincompoops lack any creative flair: 'I.. well.. you see... look, shut up or off to prison you go.'

That will be sufficient, and put an end to this long dragging and boring story. Guess everything is alright then. Foget this and move on in the long line as usual.

We reside in a society where the individual is subordinate to the group. It's the converse of where most posters come from. For this flagrant, hypocritical, arrogant lording of power and corruption by this set to continue without the ouster of General Fatbags is WRONG.

A Thai-American data scientist exposed this scandal with not little effort. It's had traction for months now, and only the unrelenting coverage by the media can attempt to help the right thing happen by attrition. SHAME ON YOU for expressing a pathetically aloof, limp-wristed attitude toward it, whether or not you meant it tongue in cheek.

This story is EXTREMELY important, and only by the media buoying it does it have a chance to create a slightly more just Thai society. You'd rather it go the other direction?

Right now we have his statement we need to set up a panel to decide on a committee that can read the statement, after reading the statement we can then pass it to the super panel who will decide what action to take. When what action is decided we can then set up a super super panel who can decide on the members of the super committee who will decide if the statement is sufficient or more detail is needed.Findings will be placed in the dear leaders in tray, who will then appoint an executive committee to give a recommendation to him on what action to take.He will then discuss this with the Deputy PM and between them they will decide if this matter endangers national security. If so this matter cannot be discussed in public.

By this time all members of the panel, committee super panel and super committee will have retired on enhanced pensions and the original statement will have been mis filed, a replacement statement will be requested so that the evidence can be fully examined

Sufficient for what exactly?

Stop this foot-dragging!

He could not afford to buy the watches on his salary.

The story that he 'borrowed' them from a friend who since died is ludicrous and insulting; men don't borrow watches from their friends to look pretty. It just isn't done.

Barring another explanation, one must assume that the money for the watches is a result of graft. Toss him out of his job today and implement a full-scale, public investigation.

It ain't rocket science...

It will never ever happen though. If the NACC tried to prosecute or investigate his lawyers will immediately file defamation complaints, causing the police to open a criminal investigation against the NACC! Then his lawyers will constantly defer, deflect and claim that he's being victimized and why aren't all the other big hiso cheeses being investigated too. And that sort of publicity and public attention grabbing just won't do.

The NACC know this and know he's got more power than they can dream of. So they have to drag it on and on and on until they can conveniently and quietly announce all has been explained to their satisfaction, it's a private matter so details won't be released and any public speculation will be subject to scrutiny.

The game's been played out before and will be again whenever necessary.
