BANGKOK, 21 March 2018 (NNT) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has set up a joint working team of state agents and fishermen to further remedy problems plaguing Thailand’s fishing industry.

The collaboration follows a statement from a network of Thai fishermen asking for better solutions to fishing issues, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with them on March 16.

The agreement is for local level fishermen to have a more direct means of submitting any recommendations or reporting any problems to the state. Issues to be handled by the joint working team include a better definition of the term “local fishermen” in legal documents, and adjustment of regulations pertinent to the fishing sector.

The team will consider such matters within the scope of existing laws and regulations with an emphasis on fairness and the best interests of the Kingdom. Its progress will be reported periodically.

The team is open to input from any other fishing networks or groups, and asks that they appoint a representative or send a memo addressing their issues. The intention is to ensure the sustainability of Thailand’s fishing sector.
