The biggest problem with the modern day English people with regards to their history is that they are taught one version of it and the former colonies have another version - if the English people were taught the truth there wouldn't be so much ignorance of the very sordid past of their nation.  I have met many English people with very different views of historical events as I was taught. For example - I remember having a conversation with an English woman in her mid twentys  - her question to me was "why do the Irish hate the English so much?" - I started mentioning a few of the things the English did to the Irish and she said it was the first time she had heard about them - I found it surprising as it was basic history taught in Irish schools.  

So I think the English should change the curriculum in their schools and teach the true facts of events and not the "victors" version!
