Oi you - pretty boy

Recommended Posts

So there I am in a Booths The Chemist store  , bending down looking along the shelf for a can of  my favorite shaving foam ,  this foreigner politely says excuse me as he bends down to take a can of my  favorite shaving foam off the shelf . I just smile and say to him that's my favorite brand .

He then proceeds to tell me that he has tried many types and brands of shaving foam and gel , but found this particular one to be his favorite , nothing going through my mind other than meeting another foreigner in Thailand that seems to like the same brand of shaving foam as my self .

Then I spotted in the store basket he was carrying ,  what I can only describe as many numerous small boxes and aerosol cans that looked to be all the same brand  . So I say to him you've got a lot of stuff there.

Well it turns out that all those packets ,  aerosol cans and boxes were products the guy buys on a regular basis from Boots . To me nothing strange so far , just some one who likes to buy products of the same brand. Then after listening to him enthusiastically run through each individual product and what it was for.  It suddenly dawned on me  , he's buying beauty cosmetic products for him self,  like skin moisturizors , facial scrubs , night cream , anti wrinkle gel and a few more cosmetic items that I did not really understand.:whistling:

Well I came away from Boots thinking to my self what did I just see , here's a man who appears to be in his 60's loading his basket up with male beautifying products that he obliviously uses on him self.:shock1:

After hearing the man's enthusiasm on these cosmetic products for some strange reason I had a mental picture of him flash through my mind .  There he was at home sat facing a mirror of a beauty table , slowly applying a liberal amount of anti wrinkle gel to his face ,  while wearing his favorite red silk kimono dressing gown

In the past I had never really taken much notice of these types of male beauty products and certainly never purchased any. I was raised in an era where real men would never ever consider putting beautifying cremes or lotions on their body , having wrinkles , blemishes and stubbly skin were considered macho and the badge of a real man .

My only past indulgence was to have a splash of Brut aftershave before heading off to the local Lecarno dance hall . Where with real man I would have a skin full and look for trouble . :post-4641-1156693976:

Back then if any of my friends or work mates were caught using these types of products they would be branded as girly or even worse.

May be I'm living in the past and just not keeping up with the times or even worse becoming an old fuddy duddy . But the thought of smothering my self with beautifying concoctions and effeminate sounding products,  that in all  likelihood do nothing to stem the passage of time,  starts to make me feel a bit queasy

So do you think the guy I met at Boots is in the minority , or do real men now buy these types of products.

:WPFflags:

I still think it's a relatively untapped market, but a growing one.

Manufacturers obviously know they've got most women buying stuff like that, so men are where the potential large growth can happen.

Often brands will be tailored to make men feel more comfortable to buy the stuff. Just add FOR MEN to the same thing might work sometimes.

Anyway, I'm with the O.P. Basically old school except I do moisturize my body (with nothing fancy) because I have very dry skin and it's more or less necessary. Not really for cosmetic purposes.

I guess there's also the metrosexual thing -- is that still a thing, the term sounds really passe.

On the implied questioning the sexuality of men into this part, I reckon it's true that gay men buy more of this stuff than straight men, but using it doesn't mean you're gay and not using it doesn't mean you're straight.

Cheers.

I could somehow imagine that some guys would do that far away from Thailand i.e. if the 60 year old wants to impress the 50 year old.

But in Thailand it's, apart from the girly thing, also a total waste of good money. Imagine all the tequila he could buy instead of creams. I am sure he will find enough girls who will tell him he is a handsome man...
