The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation today (Mar 2) warned people in 61 provinces including Bangkok to get ready ahead of the unseasonal summer storms that will hit over half of the country’s 77 provinces from April 4-8.

Chayaphol Thitisak, director-general of the department, said that in a cooperation in weather monitoring with the Meteorological Department, during April 5-7, the high pressure system from China will blanket upper regions of the country where hot weather still prevails.

This will result in thunder storms, gusty winds and freak storms, first in the Northeast and the East from April 5 -7, and then in the North and the Central including Bangkok and its vicinity the next day from April 6-7.

Warnings issued as thunderstorms predicted cross-country this week

A high-pressure mass from China will move into Thailand this week, resulting in thunderstorms, high winds, heavy rains and possibly hailstorms in most provinces outside the South.

The government’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department is coordinating with authorities in 61 provinces to prepare for severe storms from Wednesday through Sunday.

Director general Chayapol Thitisak said provincial administrations had been told to stay alert around the clock to thunderstorm advisories from the Meteorological Department.

The Meteorological Department has forecast that 17 provinces in the North, 20 in the Northeast, 17 in the Central region and seven in the East could be hit.

Chayapol said provincial authorities would be watching for trees and branches, billboards and other such structures that might be loosened and pose a hazard to people or property.

He advised citizens in general to constantly monitor broadcasts and heed warnings from the authorities.

Yes, rather tragic. Anyway, let's hope that this forecast of 'storms' is more accurate than the one last week, which resulted in hardly a single drop of rain. One could start to think that these reports are just re-posts from previous years.

Well two minutes ago where I am there was a few sudden gusts of very strong winds and a bucking fang and all the power has gone out.

Looking at www.windy.com it looks real this time, does not look like a

small storm.

One of the best sites at the moment.

Obviously like all forecasts it can't cover peoples back yards, yes some people expect that, but it gives you a really good idea of what is coming in your general direction.

This is the current radar from the tmd website. Lots of rain in that. http://weather.tmd.go.th/bma_ncLoop.php

It's very accurate for predicting rain, but it's not always up to date. This is the central region.

To be honest it's very possible that forecasting a good possibility of heavy rains and high winds is a bit better than doing a Micheal Fish. ???

For those who haven't a clue what kind of Fish he"s talking about.................here he is.

This is nothing to do with the subject, as isn't the reference to Meat Pies.

Just to expand a bit.

Mr Fish, once on the BBC forecast mentioned that someone had asked about a report from another source that UK was going to be hit by a severe hurricane, he laughed and said it was a silly idea as UK never would see a hurricane.

Not many hours later UK was battered by, guess!, and it did millions of pounds worth of damage over most of the country.

Some of the highest winds ever recorded in the UK.

It is very difficult to prevent a disaster.  You maybe able to fix it after the event...anyhow I think the Meteorological Department in Thailand should  be called  the same as it is in Australia "BOM"  it saves space when writing comments about the  weather "Bureau Of Meteorology"  We hear in Australia on radio and TV this the weather report  by "BOM".

They were spot on where I reside in BKK. Got meaningful rain on all 4 days...Fri - Mon...with the bookends being the heaviest. Spectacular thunderstorm last night (3rd). Quite the light show with earsplitting sound effects!
