All change as Phuket lifeguards presented to Governor

PHUKET:-- The state of having lifeguards patrol Phuket’s beaches took several dumbfounding twists today, with 27 lifeguards presented to the Phuket Governor as “already” working – but dedicated to patrolling only the beaches at Surin, Bang Tao, Nai Thon and Mai Khao.

The lifeguards presented themselves to Governor Norraphat Plodthong at the car park at Surin Beach at 9am, accompanied by Dr Nutpol Sirisawang, Managing Director of the lifeguards’ employer, LP Laikhum Co Ltd.

Bangkok-based consultancy LP Laikhum Co Ltd in February was quietly awarded a government contract offered by the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO, or OrBorJor) to provide 98 lifeguards to patrol Phuket beaches from Mar 1.

"However, he also said, “Some of our lifeguards are new, so they will need more training.”

“We are just starting. Don’t judge us too fast,” Dr Nutpol said."

Sure, you are just starting more than a month later than originally contracted..

Plus, how long or how many deaths through incompetence, before we can judge you ??

To PPAO and LP Laikhum:

We are NOT fooled by your FAKE LIFEGUARDS with no experience or ocean certification. They are supposed to be certified by Canadian Life Saving Society? (This is an agency that certifies pool lifeguards). Why would anyone choose them over local surfers/lifeguards who have years of experience on Phuket's beaches, and who have been certified as TRUE OCEAN lifeguards by the International Surf Lifesaving Association?

When the Southwest Monsoon arrives, they will:

1) Be afraid to enter Phuket's dangerous water and rough surf
2) Watch from the beach as tourists drown
3) Go back to the pool

or
4) The few that are foolish enough to try a rescue will drown themselves

Anyone can put on a pair of shorts and shirt and pose for a photo. Phuket needs REAL ocean lifeguards certified by a respected OCEAN LIFEGUARD organization.

The inevitable drownings will begin soon, and PPAO will have blood on their hands for this. It's not only tourists that will drown. Thai's, especially children will die too. MARK MY WORDS!

The previous contract was in the region of B20-22 million IIRC for the ISLAND.

This contract, covering only some locations is B13m-  so other contracts will have to be awarded driving the cost well above what was paid in the past.

Clearly all about the money. not preventing the loss of life.

It would be interesting to see who sits on the board of this company. Awarding the contract to someone from Bangkok with no previous experience just has a very bad smell about it.

Can any of them swim?

Lol... that’s more or less what I wondered, when viewing the OP pic... if that’s them at their best, on parade for the governor, I recommend the wearing of inflatable kiddy arm bands, vs relying on these guys

Unbelievable! The International Surf Lifesaving Association was just in Phuket a few months ago doing training and certification. None of these "lifeguards" appear to have been certified by them... Hopefully they get hired onto our southern beaches!

I yay yay, "we did it 10 years ago and improved things"

"we are just starting some lifeguards need more training"

Please don't judge us too soon, and if you do, our goons (unnamed security  company) will have a quiet word with you.
