Owners of fishing boats threaten to stop fishing to protest against IUU restrictions

Owners of fishing boats in Pattani have threatened to stop fishing to put pressure on the government to ease restrictions on illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing which they claim are impractical and affect their business.

 

Informed fishing industry sources from Pattani said that between 300-400 fishing boats were heading back to fishing piers in the province to join several other fishing vessels which were already anchored in piers to await response from the government over their petition for a reprieve from IUU fishing restrictions.

 

The sources warned that as many as 2,000 fishing boats of different sizes would head back to piers to join the fishing stoppage. Meanwhile in Songkhla province, the provincial fishery association has submitted a petition to the Command Centre to Combat Illegal Fishing to review the IUU fishing restrictions.

So the fisherman oppose following the new guidelines to protect workers and register their boats and fishin places rhey are supposed to.. after years of doing things their way and operating illegally they feel don't want to do the right thing. Typical behavior.. the junta should seize every single boat protesting the laws and sell or donate them to people who are willing to do the right thing and operate legally.

Someone better explain this action will do more to further the cause of IUU regulations than to hinder them. (Not to mention the brief reprieve to the fish stocks)

And will anybody in this country learn that when people go outside of the law / the regulations there needs to be quick action.

 

One could make an argument on behalf of the fishermen that nobody stopped them from breaking laws and regulations for decades, therefore it was OK for them to break laws and regulations.

 

Same with road traffic offences, the police just watch as illegal activity builds and do nothing for years then later it's all that much harder to get things back in line.

nothing new, doing everything illegally is the standard operating procedure for many here, these idiots have no concern for future fish stocks as long as they can make profits now, screw everyone else. Way past time for the govt to stop letting these people run the show and tell them they either obey the regulations or their boats will be seized and destroyed, problem is the govt is to soft with them and let them do as they please for too long, they really need to come down on them like a ton of bricks, once they realize they cant get away with their threats they will do as they are told

I have such a feeling that all the fish that is caught is eaten, and not by the fishermen.

 

Maybe we should start to look a bit closer to home where the fault for replenished fish stock lays.

Would be good BUT, in the back of my mind I can't help feeling;

the Junta will come to some agreement and subsidise the fishermen.

The EU will continue to ignore the statement that the fishing is still illegal after years of promises and not issue a red card.

The USA will continue to import seafood products.

The Chinese will continue to import seafood products.

Great, stop fishing and stop throwing all your crap over the sides of your boats.  Over 90% of all rubbish on Thailand beaches originates from Fishing boats. Please STOP Fishing!!!

This leaves me with a question.

How will the international fishing authorities deal with this? Will they see it as the fishing boats are saying they will fish illegally and no one can stop them.and stop buying their fish? Or will they just ignore it and let things keep going as they are?
