The exodus of Bangkokians heading to the North and Northeast for the five-day Songkran holidays brought traffic on the Ayutthaya ringroad to a stand still, causing a vehicle line of over 10 kilometres late on Thursday morning.

As of 11am, Ayutthaya deputy traffic police chief Pol Colonel Sanga Thirasaranyanon said the accumulated line of vehicles stretched over 10 kilometres from in front of Thammasat University’s Rangsit campus to the Thai market on Pratuham Phra I and to Bang Pa-in ring road.

He said that the heavy traffic was caused by a bottleneck in the Ayutthaya ringroad where it connects to the Asia highway, Phaholyothin road, the western ringroad and the eastern ringroad.

He said the northbound Asia highway also saw heavy congestion with lines of vehicles piled up to Phaholoyothin.

He said the western ringroad from Bang Bua Thong to Bang Pa-in also saw a more than 10-kilometres-long lineup, while the eastern ringroad to Ban Pa-in was also congested with a several kilometres-long line of cars.

Sanga said motorists who are driving to the North should avoid Rangsit and should instead make a left turn at Thammasat to the highway No 347 and pass through Pathum Thani to Bang Pahan district in Ayutthaya.

He said motorists from Bang Bua Thong should drive straight to Suphan Buri and Chainat or make a left turn to highway No 347.
