THAI DURIAN sold like hot cakes after Jack Ma showed the magic of e-commerce during his visit to Thailand by selling 80,000 golden pillow durians on his online platform T-mall within one minute. While Ma was in Thailand to make a mega-deal on investment on Thursday, Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong gifted the founder of China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba a fresh “golden pillow”, the Kingdom’s most famous variety of durian. Alibaba has signed a deal for durian worth US$428 million (Bt13.4 billion) with the Thai government, according to state-run Xinhua News yesterday. Ma said at a press interview in Bangkok on Thursday that during the pre-order two days before the launch, there were over 60,000 orders and immediately 40,000 durians were sold, which rose to 80,000 within a minute. The “golden pillow” durian, Thailand’s most well-known export variety, has been sold on Alibaba’s online supermarket since Wednesday, a day before Ma signed four memoranda of understanding with the Thai government on trade, investment, support for e-commerce and tourism. The Chinese e-commerce giant is reportedly splashing about $330 million in Thailand, as it aims to tap Chinese consumers’ appetite for the Southeast nation’s agricultural goods and its tourism market. At the ceremony, Alibaba and the Thai Commerce Ministry launched the first official Thai rice flagship store on T-mall, the world’s largest third-party platform for brands and retailers, besides driving the sale of popular Thai fruits into China. Alibaba also pledged to assist Thai agriculture businesses in harnessing the power of the company’s insights into the Chinese market. “China is on its way to becoming the world’s largest consumer, driven by rising income and a growing middle class of 300 million. There is no better time than now for trade-oriented countries to seize this opportunity to export to China as the country continues to open its doors wider for global trade,” said Ma. Ma has been to Thailand several times and in 2016, he also met with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha during the G20 summit in China’s Hangzhou city. Prayut said he personally asked Ma to help promote Thai agricultural products, particularly palm oil, rice and para rubber as well as cooperatives, community enterprises and modern farming using digital and related technologies and Alibaba’s expertise in e-commerce and related fields. ezzra
What the PM is oblivious to, is that many fruit orchards around Thailand are now owned by Chinese wholesalers and importers of many of Thailand's most sought after fruits by the Chinese, and this is why lately, a fruit that use to cost 50-60 baht a kilo cost now 150-200 baht a kilo, Thailand just love to seel itself piece by piece to the Chinese.... And it will happen with ALL fruits of Thailand. The one getting better is only the government, not the farmers or even just the people of Thailand. Eating fruit in Thailand will be very fast very expensive to do so. The rich in Thailand and or China dont care.
xtrnuno41
Tmall just checked only for big players, as it will cost you yearly 350.000 dollar. OK long live internet and computer, it means common people will go down and will be crushed. Thailand government now have orchards to grow, or they sell to China ?! It would be wise for Thailand to have their own, it means Thai people working and making an income. Dont give it away to Chinese as they or have their own people working there or the Thai for almost nothing. Share the wealth of the fruit Thailand (government) Dont just stick it in your own pocket, of wealthy people. It is sad to see ever since the beginning of new age, its going down hill in everything, only not for rich ones , they get better and better. neeray
I think there is some twisting of reality going on here, and some Ecommerce sensationalism. It sounds to me like the 80,000 durians were presold but the order was “officially” placed for sensationalistic value in the first few seconds of the Ecommerce launch. That being the case, big deal! This has shades of a Trump-style deal complete with bending of the truth. Or could I say “fake news”. I too am planning the launch of an Ecommerce site soon in Thailand. Glad I am not naive. If I was, I could easily be wrongly buoyed by fake success stories like this.
