Marine department warns speed boat operators to properly check their vessels

All speed boat operators in southern tourist provinces have been told to carefully check their vessels to make sure that they function properly and are safe to avoid possible accident.

Mr Suchin Rattanasathien, director of Region 5 office of Marine Department, disclosed on Friday (April 20) that investigation of the the April 11 incident in Phang-nga’s Thai Muang district where two speed boats burned and exploded in flames showed that oil from the oil tank leaked out and reached the engine room as it was being repaired.

Sparks from the engine being switched on caused the oil to catch fire which eventually engulfed the speed boat.  Another speed boat which was anchored a short distance away also caught from sparks from the first vessel and burned.  The skipper of one of the speed boats and his mechanic suffered burns.

I know it's a western idea and stating the obvious in that light but....right, it ought to be the Marine Dept checking boats, vessels and ships for engineering soundness and safety compliance on an annual basis, and randomly in between.   There's probably a system in place (dunno) but execution of otherwise decent programs and laws here is where things seem to fall apart.  Cynically, might be a source of income for "professional' civil servants, holding the requirements over boat owners' heads then suggest a backhander to look the other or let some dodgy shit slide.  Sigh.  :saai:

what is the point when the people maintaining the boat cant even detect a leak

Dunno.  Would have to be very hot to catch "oil" on fire with some arcing and sparking.  Sounds more like fuel.

What engine room? The engines are outside on the back. Smells fishy to me.

The Thai boat owners check would be something along these lines.

1) Have Engine - OK

2 ) Have big noisy - OK

3 ) Have Gasoline -OK

4 ) Have Noz Oxide - OK
