So; they are now 'ramping up' something that should have been done 40 years ago !

My guess is about 90% of tourists renting motorbikes do not have a proper license.  And perhaps 70% have never ridden a motor bike in their life.

  • A step in the right direction.....   Though 2k baht will not create enough fear...Try 20k baht..

Agree with you though this one is confusing for many rental shops or police.

Then their business, which has very few rules to follow, should take the time to learn what they are and put the $$$$ to one side.....But they will not, the $$$$ will always win until the $$$$ are taken away via fines...

Maybe a lot of cheap ex rentals scooters in Phuket soon....not many people from my country have a full motorcycle license and there's never any insurance anyway.they should be fining the renters not the consumers.they are the ones in the wrong.some tourists maybe think they can ride a scooter on a full car license like it used to be in the uk.

Can't see any problem here.its about fining the rental operators and the tourists without a valid license...more like have you read the whole report.a large majority of people from the uk don't have a full motorcycle license because.1 the weather,2 cost and insurance,3 safety and probably the 3 part test puts them off.

Good, this means you agree that your comment 'they should be fining the renters' is non sensical, since that is exactly what the OP is about.

I should of wrote it plainly that they should target the rental operators which is the root of the problem and then there wouldn't be unlicensed people riding around and no need to fine them.lets face the facts the police won't do nothing but milk the tourists as usual.if they stuck to there words the scooter business would fold in a week.
