New student IQ test being developed, to launch in 2020

Featured Replies

I have taught thousands of students during the course of my career, and this is one undeniable truth - every student is unique. Some are square pegs, some are round, some aren't pegs at all. Some excel at math but can't climb a tree, some are monkeys that can't read to save their lives but can put together a wooden puzzle in seconds flat. There will NEVER be a dependable, comprehensive test and will only stigmatize the students who don't fit the mold suggested.

So basically take an interest in your child. You’d think that would be common sense everywhere in the world but seemingly it’s not always the case.    Why have kids if you aren’t going to do

And they'll be using a Thai IQ scale, yes? Everybody starts from 120 so nobody loses face?

If Forest Gump could not score over 75 and ended up a millionaire investor in Apple shares....then there is still hope for all these Thai kids who score less than 90...

In the movies perhaps.

I have been teaching for over 12 years here and found the course syllabus very inflexible with teachers just pushing through a set amount of information without even stopping to look if the students understand it ( most do not )

I have taught in government and private schools ( with the governments recommended syllabus  ) and spent many years teaching weekends at Language schools. i have had M 6 students who did not speak any English even when they told me in Thai they had a native speaker teaching them English at their school.

Most of the time Thais teach from a book and have to get through a set number of pages each lesson, they are not open for questions and even homework they set is from the book ( most homework is done in groups whilst still at school,, copied from each other of course ) Basically the emphasis is on quantity not quality learning .

I refused to teach from a text book and all my lessons were unique and I took time to make sure the students understood most of the lesson .

All these tests are just paperwork exercises which have no real meaning or purpose. Just Thai show.

Perhaps the parents could stop hand feeding the kids before they reach 10 years old.

Some of them can't even hold a pencil at 5 because their hands are so weak.

Had one of our 2 or 3 day breaks breaks this week and at breakfast my wife quietly brought my attention to a nearby table where the father and 6 or 7 year old fat son had their faces stuck in their mobiles and the mother was spoon-feeding both of them breakfast.

That's just funny.

My wife did try to get a sneaky photo but couldn't manage it.

If the new test is anything like the driving test questions, the kids might as well just stick a pin in the answers; they'll probably score higher with pot-luck.

Forget the students. How about developing an IQ test for adult politicians, senior civil servants and military officers; you know, the ones who get promotion based on money and not the quality of their intelligence. That would clear the decks of the brain dead seat warmers.

On second thoughts maybe the children's IQ test would do just as well for them and have the same effect.

You sir are going to have a lot of explaining to do when your former students become leaders of some revolution.

These will be very difficult subjects to score well on for most of the students that learn by rote.

Please in 2020, do not give the result, it might look like Thai bashing.

I took an online IQ test recently and my results were super high, something like 160.  I think it described me as super genius level.  deal with it.

  1. This is fantastic news, tommorows leaders will shine.Hopefully they won't fancy crop tops

The Mental Health Department is developing a new Intelligence Quotient (IQ) testing quiz for children aged 2-15 and will roll it out nationwide in late 2010.

The new quiz is being designed to be relevant to the Thailand 4.0 era and to be conveniently used by teachers and public health officials nationwide so that children with lower IQ scores could be swiftly provided with aid.

It's always convenient to make up random tests with questionable standards and methods. I wonder, what relevance, if any, such a 'Mental Health Department of Thailand IQ Test' would have internationally. Then again, it's probably just meant to compare intelligence quotients among Thais.

Thais, according to their home-made IQ tests, have all an IQ of 300 and above, so they are intelligent enough to travel back in time...

If you had taken a Thai IQ test, your score would have been 580!

Why? While the average IQ of Earthlings is, say, 90, results of the "Thailand 4.0 IQ Test" will show that Thais, actually, have an average IQ of 160, which makes them all little Einsteins (if they only knew, what an 'Einstein' is)...

Good news, especially as it should have been implemented eight years ago, according to WEBFACT.

I don't think I agree with the view that all people are unique and that therefore any standard test is of no usefulness. People are not as unique as one might think and standard IQ tests have been a part of the education systems of countries with a lot more success than Thailand, which has proved they are frankly incapable.

I do however view the prospect of Thailand making a useful IQ test as being quite dismal, if ever there was a nation of under-achievers who think they are over-achievers, then this is it. I would love to say that I believe any such new test will be used honestly to develop a better education system for Thais, but in all honesty, I look at the Thai obsession with money, prestige and a blind loyalty to people who rip them off, and think... nah, it'll never happen, not for as long as their bums point to the ground.

I can honestly say I wish 80% of them would do exactly that and sod off. Life would immeasurably better if the only Thais left were Thais with an IQ of more than 100 and could develop a culture that is not a left-over from the bronze-age.

Are you sure? I quite like having the low IQ Thais here, especially the women. Not that they, the women, are particularly low IQ, but the guys are. So running rings about them is not that difficult, given their low expectations of men.

lol. I suppose there is that, I hadn't thought of it that way.

On the plus side, they have successfully taught lots of us to expect less from them. I now expect close to sod all.

...sounds like they want to erase the past....

...more pretending about how great everyone is here...

...16 years ago the average IQ of Thai students...published in a national paper...was 89....

...but now.....we found a way to make that all go away...

...same testing procedures as with the teachers and policemen.....???

Is it perhaps a step in the right direction?

At least doing something.

Making people aware?

My understanding of an IQ test is that the mean score is 100, 63% of the tested people would score between 85 and 115 on the test. If the average score increases then the 100 mark will also increase as this is based upon the average gained in the test. you can only get an average score of 98 if you are testing against a large number of people who are gaining higher scores. you cannot have an average of 98 among all those tested. perhaps the testers or the media require an IQ test.
