Weakness looms for ThaiBev's earnings as Thailand stays sober

Beer production in the country continued its rate of decline at -5%

Thailand is still not in the mood for drinking as its Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) said that beer production continued to be on a declining trend in March, signalling weak market demand. The rate of decline has continued from -19.5% YoY in February to -5.1% YoY in March.

In turn, this could hit the sales of the country's beer and spirits giant Thai Beverage. "Recovery in alcohol consumption in Thailand has been slower than expected," said RHB Research analyst Juliana Cai. "As such, we think that sales and margin in the upcoming 2Q2018 results would continue to be soft."

RHB Research's Thai analyst also observed that there was an increased number of craft beer producers in Bangkok city. "More breweries are trying to launch premium products to tap into the high-end market.

That's the real story. Beer is too expensive for the 300b a day worker. It's not a matter of staying sober it's getting drunk cheaper and for that white spirit is the obvious answer.

Of course beer production is down when the vast majority of drinkers can only afford backyard moonshine (Lao Kao)!

I'd say that's it's possible that people are just fed up with the horrible crap that passes as local beer in this country. There seems to be a booming business around craft beers and all, even with the ridiculous import taxes imposed on these proper beers. Our supermarket seems to carry an ever growing selection of solid quality beers (all imported) and they seem to sell pretty well.

While craft beers are huge in virtually every country on this planet; Thailand seems more interested in protecting the local beer monopoly. People will vote with their wallets...

Police are working hard to stop drink and drive, why not launch a drink more and drive. Lol..

Well that's good news, now if that would result in fewer deaths on the

roads due to drink driving,it would be a result.

Sadly, the mass market American lagers make Thai beer seem like a high end product.

I didn't find Chang to be that bad honestly, but Leo sucked.  I also tried "U" lager beer and it was absolutely dreadful.

Much in line with the weak retail economy. Retail shops, pubs and restaurants practically have lesser customers these days.

I am convinced the economy is not doing well and businesses and the population are having a tough time.

Right up until I see the latest government figures and I know I am wrong again. Ha ha ha.

It would be enough to turn me to drink if it did not cost nearly twice as much as 10 years ago and the pound wasn't down so much.

That might be bad news for that senior bent cop who gets 600,000 baht annually from ThaiBev for doing what no one actually knows.

Hardly backyard, it is a byproduct of sugar refining, it is made in massive plants.

I'd be interested to know how much a boycott of Singa, ThaiBev and CP has cost the companies.

Spot on.

changing the focus. Wine (red) what is going on with supermarket supplies? Chateau cardboard by the box just about non existent now the larger bottles are vanishing, Conspiracy to get us to buy expensively taxed 750 ml bottles?

The real reason is that the "old style" regular tourists who use bars & drink are slowly going elsewhere to

try & avoid the hotels that are catering for the Chinese, Indian & middle east market.

Even the hotel corridors stink.

And how many of the above do you see in the bar I drink in 1 in 1,000 if lucky

My local Macro does only got 5-6 different Australian made Wine boxes and Peter Vella from California, all the French  bottles disappeared after the last tax increase. The 3000cc Wine boxes went up from 600 THB to over 900 THB.

Main reasons why is less tourists due to all the scams & attacks shown in social media.the exchange rate.the 2 tier pricing.dirty beaches.price of beer even before the tax hike.also there's no decent thai women anymore.they're either fat or katoeys & most bars pad your bin.if you complain a thug attacks you.happenned to me by a bouncer in a beach road bar near soi8.did a sneaky from behind but he got a shock when i got up as he still was reining blows at me & then i twatted him.i was surprised th taxi drivers 2 bars down or the thugs that play snooker in the back near the toilets didn't jump me.then i thiught he must be a bad un with them.i was telling somebody about it & he said that he does it all the time with older customers.typical thai thug.i am in my mid 50's & had 11 beers thats why i became a victim.i have 10 beers before my first pee then drink another 10 or 20

And how many have you had before posting the above nonsense???
