Two nurses sacked after video of "offensive" talk to elderly patient goes viral

A nursing home in Thailand has been shamed into sacking two nurses after a video was posted online.

 

Two million people viewed the video that featured the nurses teasing a barely compos mentis patient with what was deemed to be inappropriate language and behavior.

 

Netizens went crazy with comment - in Thailand the elderly are generally given great respect and anything to the contrary is looked down upon.

 

The person who posted the clip - Guntapon Jirasuvinai - used some foul language of their own in comments demanding:

 

"Is this fun for you? Is this how you should behave with the bedridden who are barely conscious?"

 

Head of the Ban Jai Keua nursing home - named only as "Khun Ann" - told INN that both nurses had been sacked.

 

She is contacting the nursing authorities in efforts to ensure they don't get employed elsewhere.

 

The family of the elderly patient were not pressing charges, she said, so just relieving the nurses of their employment was the right thing to do.

 

The nurses told her they didn't mean to do it.

 

Links to the video have now gone though a small part of a clip was on the INN site.

"I didn't mean to do it"  I used to use those words when I was prepubescent. A lot of Thai's never seem to reach that stage of life.

Happens a lot in the UK too. Many carers, male and female, of the young, elderly, and those with mental health problems, get caught out mistreating them. Sometimes it's institutionalized in a particular establishment, other times a particular person or group within the establishment.

 

Some people just shouldn't be put in positions of trust over vulnerable people.

Interesting differentiation that's often not used. In the UK people get called "nurse" in care homes who aren't nurses, have no qualification to be.

 

Possible that's one of the problems. Recruiting aides, paying them the going aides rates, and then expecting nurse professional standards?

Yes..or not hiring enough professional nurses to supervise them and set the tone. Given the nature of the work it is reasonable for care homes to hire nurses aides, but essential that there be enough professional nursing staff in supervisory roles.

Yes, naturally. The sons and daugthers just give four-six granchildren to their old mother and father to look after. If they are lucky they also attach some money every month for food and care.

It might not be a crime to talk rudely, but any half normal child would be very upset if they found out that their parents were treated in that manner. I know I would be! I compliment the family on being so forgiving. I know I wouldn't be.  

Imagine how you'd feel if you, for whatever reason, had to leave your sick mother/father in a home in the belief that he'll/she'll be "cared for and well treated" in their final days and then find out that two ignorant dimwits took the p*ss out of them. Disgraceful behaviour! I don't care what nationality they are. 

They should be dragged back to the care home and made wai in front of these poor patients on their death beds.

Unfortunately this happens all over the world , in elderly homes.  Alzheimers patients were treated really bad on a nursing home in Norway some years ago . My mother died of Alzheimer's and I was always worried how the staff would treat her right until the end.  Because she could not inform me anymore , she could not even remember me in the end.

Being a qualified professional nurse in no way excludes them from being arse holes. I remember an English nurse in London telling me of the scorn and contempt she had for her elderly patients. It was about forty years ago and I still remember how shocked I was at hearing such remarks from a so called 'angel of mercy'.

Something along the lines of ... undue cruelty or abuse might begin the list of charges.

Sadly this is not just a Thai thing that's why I keep multi cams on my 90 year old dad 24/7 in the UK.

Recent reports from New Zealand  and Australia,

where sums of about one thousand dollars a week are spent,

have shown some terrible abuse in these nursing homes.

a consistent pattern of elderly abuse, to a high degree.

Good thinking and if all nursing staff are aware of that he should be well taken care of .

We have all seen some of the hidden camera videos where the elderly patient has been poorly treated , neglected and even robbed in their homes by so called " Care Assistants " . Already a massive shortage of UK nurses across the board and now as we enter the autumn of the post 2nd world war baby boom things do not look good .
