snoop1130
Walking Street to be cleaned up! But it's not what you might think. Raunchy Walking Street in South Pattaya is facing its biggest makeover in decades early next year. The unsightly hanging wires are set to be buried underground in an effort to beautify the infamous red light street. But not everyone is thrilled about it - the operators are worried about the effect on their business of the anticipated three months of work. Yesterday a meeting was held at Raas attended by mayor Anan Jaroenchasri, City Hall officials, electrical engineers and the bar and restaurant owners. The operators in particular wanted to know what would happen and how the work could have as minimal an impact on their profits as possible. The hanging wires of Thailand have been a growing problem for many years. A budget of 11.6 billion has been set aside to bury the wires in four major cities - Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Korat and Pattaya. Pattaya is receiving 3.1 billion of the pie for work on eight roads - with Walking Street being the fourth in line. Work on Sukhumvit, North and Central Pattaya is now about 50% complete, reported Sophon yesterday. A total of 46 kilometers of wires will have been buried in Pattaya when the work is finally completed by 2021. Work has already been completed on many main roads in Bangkok. The issue received widespread attention in 2016 when none other than Microsoft founder Bill Gates took some snaps of the mess created by the wires and commented on the problem. Popular Post observer90210
The operators and businesses are always moaning, not matter where in the world when the city makes efforts the tidy up an area., If the municipality keeps it's word, this will be a significant and positive advancement to the future and will almost make visitors forget how polluted the beaches are. 2 1

Someone forgot to mention the worrying effect on the "shareholders" of the bars and go-go lounges and all the other seedy establishments. Some police wives and mia nois will be on a tight budget over the coming months.

gandalf12
".... in an effort to beautify the infamous red light street" please explain how you can beautify a red light district? It is what it is and beautification is not really their main concern

Divide that by eight then check the bank balances of the committee members who gave the green light for this scheme. 1

Not a prostitution centre of Thailand You are welcome to go to any of the hundreds of beaches in Thailand that don't have Pattaya's reputation ( they all have red light areas though ). Why does the reputation of one place in all of Thailand cause such angst among the chattering classes that don't even live there? It's really simple- if one doesn't like Pattaya, just don't go there and go live in Saudi Arabia or somewhere that is more in line with one's desires for a nightlife devoid place.
thaibeachlovers
I can think of a lot of roads in Pattaya that need the wires buried before Walking St. I'm thinking it's a deliberate move to ruin the businesses there and make them close down.

newnative
While they are burying the wires maybe they can improve the horrible, ugly entrance area to Walking Street from Beach Road, starting with some sidewalks and pedestrian management. 1

Bott
I wonder if the great civil engineering minds be hind this epic construction will install multiple conduits for future works or just the usual half hearted Thainess that prevails in all things Thai... I'm not sure if they really realize the true amount in recycled materials they would gain from the old wiring.. At $7.00 a kilo for copper alone by country wife.. . US $ 18.000.000.000 + AND THAT IS NO EXAGGERATION............
