The head of the Department of Land Transport has advised people buying second hand vehicles to exercise caution to avoid falling victim to gangs stealing cars or selling vehicles used in the commission of crime.

INN reported that people should beware if vehicles are offered for less than the market price.

Sanit Pornmuang said that people buying second hand cars should go to the DLT centers themselves and have the cars engine numbers and other details checked out at the service centers there.

It is possible to just sign documents in Thailand and never go to DLT centers and people can fall victim to gangs in this way.

He advised that a trip to the DLT will be able to confirm if the vehicle has been stolen or used in crime and protect the customer.

If a vehicle is too cheap be suspicious, was the message.

I'm sure the criminals would be just as happy to sell their cars at higher prices to avoid suspicion.  It's a lot of hassle to go to a DLT for verification--why not make such a service publicly available online?  People could enter a VIN and check that the owner listed matched the title.  This could then be accomplished on the spot.
Yes the whole vehicle registration process needs a total overhaul and brought into the modern age...right now its stuck in the steam age.
