Roaches join rats, sewage on list of Pattaya Beach blemishes

image.png

PATTAYA:--The rats endemic on Pattaya Beach have new neighbors: cockroaches.

Kanrapa Mukdasanit of the Disease Control Department on June 13 blamed tourists and locals for the insect scourge by improperly disposing of their food, trash and other waste.

However, the cockroaches are nesting and swarming around putrid beach outflow pipes through which raw sewage has repeatedly spilled over the past year, clearly showing that Pattaya City Hall, not beach-goers, shoulders most of the blame.

Pattaya has battled in recent years against both an epidemic of rats and frequent sewage spills, both of which have spoiled the sand and sea and only amplified Pattaya’s long-running reputation for having a filthy beach.

The roaches are doing nothing to dispel that image. City officials, however, seem content to blame tourists for dropping food and litter.

The Health Department said it plans to spread pesticide around the beach to bring the roach infestation under control.

I avoid the beaches in Pattaya and Jomtien as they are so very dirty and unhealthy to walk on: just walk on a landfills and you have the same feeling!

So Pattaya is far from a beach resort or family resort as you have to be very concerned about the health of your family!!!!!!!!!!!

guess the pattaya municipal has no money to build a decent waste water treatment facility to let the sewer /toiletwater through upon release to the beach

In a meeting I attended  with the Mayor - he explained that even though Pattaya generates a huge revenue - the money goes to the central government - and very little is then returned to the city.

I can sort of believe this - he seemed genuine enough.

The council could try to clean up the trash, that would reduce the issues with roaches and rats.

Why is that a hard concept to grasp? When you invite tourist to an area there will need to be some effort made to keep the area in presentable condition as it is when any number of humans gather. Its a cost of doing business. And if you want to keep doing business you need to provide some effort to keep your offering in good shape. Of course if you put down enough pesticide all the creepy crawlers will be gone, not the trash, but the insects will be gone until it all washes into the sea. Which will be right after you have poisoned (to some degree) those who go to the beach, especially the youngsters that tend to put everything in their mouths.

In the end it would seem Pattaya has so many contributing factors to this issue it is going to take more effort than what the current city fathers are willing to expend. So those who come will take back a less than flattering image of Thailand that will circulate and undermine any effort to increase tourism after some years pass.

It has the money you just have to prise it out of the pockets that it shouldn't have gone into in the first place and then you have to get some educated people on council who actually know and understand what their doing.

You would be hoping. That sounds like Work and it would be hard to find any Thais who would do that

Just a topic that was discussed at the council meeting by some councilors. How to get those filthy Farang tourists to stop throwing their rubbish on the beach because Thai people don't do that sort of stuff Also in their line of thinking they might have stumbled on a gold mine here. They could fine those filthy Farang tourists 200,000 Baht because they are breeding Roaches and throwing rubbish on the beach which is quite opposite to what Thai people do The Farang also have no work permit to breed Roaches. So 200,000 Baht fine justifiable.

A picnic with family on the beach while surrounded with  rodents and the friendly flying big black bugs.  Looks like from now on I need to spend more time on the beach.I feel like time being wasted doing anything else

I wouldn't expect a different reaction from these retarded city officials.

The recent first reaction of chief of police  to drugs and violence was a sentence that started with "this will damage the image of blablabla....." instead of "we realize that we have a problem with....."

They are always more concerned about the effects on tourism when it comes to criminal activity and  environmental hazards instead of human lives and the quality of life.

Cleaning up Pattaya should start on soi 9 at the police station.  All the money extorted from local companies by the police could be used to target the environment.

well said but that's only 1 department.how far "up" can you clean before you hit a ceiling?
