Trump lauds Taiwan's Foxconn, threatens Harley on Wisconsin trip

The decision to start producing Harleys abroad dates back to spring 2017, when there was not one word about punitive tariffs being imposed by the EU, and no complaint by Donald Trump either. Harley just follows the money trail, as it has been successfully done by Triumph, Ducati, Honda, and Yamaha, who all have their production facilities in Thailand and other Asian "low-wage" countries. Besides Asia is considered a strong future market for motorcycles, whilst the sales of Harleys in the U.S. dwindle.

Low wage for sure! With Thai minimum wage @$12/day, HD can reap millions. Why would they stay in USA?

Don get cute HD! Your pending business losses are your sacrifice to support my political agenda. aka tarrifs. And keep all employees regardless if you are losing money. My political standing and ego is more important than you.

And change your name to Harley Davidson-Trump!

You mean Trump was making decisions about TPP already before he was elected?

How about do your own homework next time, then you won't look so uninformed....

Talking about doing your homework, you could check where Trump was when the first reports of the Thailand plant appeared in the press in 2016, and then take in consideration that HD didn't buy that plot of land the day before.

Again deliberately misleading. The casual reader / listener would think from Trump's repeated vitriolic comments against Harley Davidson that Harley Davidson is ceasing production in the US and importing foreign-made motorcycles into the US. He wants people to think that. It is absolutely not true.

He is playing to an ignorant gallery. It is highly irresponsible. It is also a warning to others not to make any criticism of Trump decisions, however justified, as he will launch a series of non-fact twitter attacks against them.

Simply too bad millions of Americans are so stupid to continue to support of this ego maniacal moron.

One of the reasons is they are deprived of balanced information and bombarded with propaganda from :-

Fox News

The Trump Twitter account

Russian bots controlled by Russian Intelligence

Never underestimate the power of propaganda and the power that controlling the channels through which information flows brings.

Geez man, what the heck is wrong with you?  I gave you a link to an article which quoted the CEO of Harley who made it exactly clear his intentions and why.  This isn't some reporter, or PR person, or politician, or some Trump hack talking about a Thailand plant in 2016, but the freakin CEO of Harley Davidson himself.  Lordy.

Well , one unforeseen consequence of Donald's " trade war " is that american companies who sell a lot abroad start producing there as well , just to stay competitive .

On the other hand , some big companies from abroad will set up factories in the US to avoid the import taxes ... just a question of calculating profits that might lead to more multinational companies and globalisation .

But anyway , something that is produced in the country where it is supposed to be sold as well , does not need to be shipped anymore , so a little less pollution , a good thing .

You are 100% wrong with HD. People who want HD don't care for the price and they want a made in USA HD. It is not a question of quality product its a question of image. When you buy a HD you buy a piece of history. What history, what tradition you will buy from a HD made in Thaïland ? Nothing

I'm not a biker so maybe this is an easy question: How can you tell where a bike was made just by looking at it?

You are 100% wrong about foreigners who buy HD.  They do care about the price, but they don't care where it's made.

Are you aware that Harley sales in the US have been dropping for years before Trump's new tariffs?

It was that decline that Harley-Davidson said it would close its assembly plant in Kansas City and merge its operations into its plant in York, Pa. Where's the American tradition to save the company?

Sons of Anarchy just doesn't attract more sales anymore.

In response Harley will also expand global sales and expand its appeal to women, minorities, young adults and city dwellers. But in the tradition of American innovation Harley will start producing its first electric motorcycle within 18 months.

Not quite the old Harley traditional rider, hey?

You speak of low quality and uneducated people like the one who buy Rolex. When you buy a HD for 40000 € you don't care to paid 2000 € more because of taxes. If HD want to compete on price they are dead. Did Ferrary or Bentley compete on prices ? No. HD can make some motorbike like the honda wave and sold it for 32000 Bahts and of course they will sold more

Hmmm, if what you say is true, then multinational companies who sell luxury items shouldn't care much about tariffs.  I wonder if BMW or Mercedes care much about the tariffs that Trump might put on the EU for automobiles?  I'm guessing they care a great deal.  Look, the CEO of HD knows much more about the business climate for his products than you do.  And if he feels that HD needs to relocate some of their manufacturing to minimize the effects of tariffs, I will tend to believe him more than you.

Look at the VIN which is stamped on the frame. If it starts with 1HD, the bike was made in the US.

Say hey Donald T. - you can't force a company like H.D. of all! They know their business, competition has been hard on them. To manufacture more economically is their bread. Instead of giving them a chance to get back on track D.T. is putting pressure Mafia style on them. Harley isn't Foxconn, they don't sell a billion motorbikes a year. They sell good bikes, with tradition that outlasts any Foxconn gadget. Get that straight D.T. Nonsense and let them make their decisions in the land of the not so free after all.
