PHUKET: People intending to swim at beaches along Phuket’s west coast have been warned to stay between the red-yellow “Swim Here” flags – or best not go in the water at all.

The warning, from the International Surf Lifesaving Association, comes as strong southwesterly monsoon conditions have whipped up the surf along the entire west coast.

“Strong winds, large waves, severe rip currents blasting Phuket's west coast. ISLA recommends all exposed west coast beaches be CLOSED until conditions improve,” The Phuket News was told this morning (today).

This pic was snapped from a webcam at the south end of Karon a few minutes ago.

Swimmers can be seen either in, or very close to, several of the main rips taking water back out to sea.

No wonder so many weak swimmers drown there.
