PM welcomes movies on rescue operation but calls for caution

 

 

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has no objection to Thai or foreign movie companies making movies about the Tham Luang rescue operation as it would  help enhance Thailand’s image, government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said today.

 

However, he said the prime minister would want to see such movie project  carefully considered. A national-level ad hoc panel to oversee the matter will be set up, he said.

 

The prime minister also thanked the Thai media for adhering to advice of psychiatrists and social welfare workers to stay away from the 13 Tham Luang cave survivors.

I'm sure the threats of imprisonment for interviewing the kids will just make film-makers realise any films will made outside Thailand.

Although I strongly object to such a movie, however, I would only CONSENT on the condition all proceeds go to charities and no one or organisation etc benefits from this movie ?

When Hollywood puts a special emphasis on those 'stateless' kids, the PM and his cabinet and their committees will have a cow.  Expect a decently made movie to be produced and filmed outside of Thailand.  I doubt that activist Hollywood is going to wai to the junta's commands.

Quite a number of Hollywood directors have no problem at all taking the money and advice of the US military when it comes to make movies about the Irak war, for example.

 

Some of these movies, involving famous names, have even been denounced as pure propaganda!

 

As for the cave movie, it could be shot anywhere, but without formal consent of the concerned parties, the producers would not be able to use any of the real names, something that would severely damage the authenticity of the movie...

Unfortunately most charities are known to "rake-off" a higher proportion of their "gifts" than even the Thai authorities seem to manage.

Any proceeds should go DIRECTLY to the people involved, including (but not limited to) the kids, the rescuers, and the other supporting personnel.  What they then choose to do with it is obviously up to them.

Possibly shot in Malaysia:

1. They just voted out an awful government

2. They have some to the worlds largest and longest caves

3. Pinewood is there and eager for projects

4. Plenty of Thais living there already

5. It is not junta controlled Thailand

6. It will probably end up being cheaper to make there anyway, as there will far to many in Thailand with their hand out. 

 

How little little p knows about the outside world is mind numbing.  And as you know, those in Hollywood know how to exercise their options.

Quite right. And it wouldn't be the first time for Malaysia (or the Philippines) to stand in as "Thailand" in a movie production. After all, the Thailand Film Office insists on "reviewing the script" (as in: deleting or rewriting each and every line that it deems critical of the country even to the slightest degree and which doesn't describe all aspects in flaming colors) before greenlighting any film project. And even then foreign film crews constantly have "government minders" breathing down their necks, ensuring that the by-now-sanitized script is strictly followed.

He jests. Assuming a film company actually sees commercial benefit in producing a film, they wouldn't be concerned with little details such as using the actual site for filming. So the PM's opinion will be of little concern.

So the international communities Behaved Badly. Maybe there is a comedy movie in this one. It could be called "Getting fined outside the cave" or something to that effect.

Why would that be?
Unauthorized documentaries are written and filmed and set to stage plays all the time.

Worst they could do is charge the producers with Defamation or “violation of the computer crimes act”. Applicable in Thailand only of course, and ban it from being shown, in Thailand.
