LONDON (Reuters) - A number of people were injured after a car collided with security barriers outside London's parliament building on Tuesday and a man who drove the vehicle was arrested, police said.

"The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene. A number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers remain at the scene. We will issue further info when we have it," London's police force said in a statement on Twitter.

Footage on social media showed heavily armed police response units arriving at the scene, with the area outside the parliament building in central London cordoned off.

Police said they could not immediately say whether it was a terrorism-related incident or not.

"We're still trying to piece it together," a spokeswoman said.

In March 2017, Khalid Masood, 52, killed four people on nearby Westminster Bridge before he stabbed to death an unarmed police officer in the grounds of parliament. He was shot dead at the scene.

It was the first of five attacks on Britain last year which police blamed on terrorism.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's counter-terrorism police chief said investigators believe a man deliberately drove a car into pedestrians before crashing into barriers outside parliament on Tuesday and the arrested suspect was not cooperating with detectives.

"Our priority now is to formally establish the identity of the suspect and establish his motivation if we can. He is not currently cooperating," London Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu told reporters.

"Given that this appears to be a deliberate act, the method, and this being an iconic site, we are treating it as a terrorist incident."

Good to see all the racist members rise to this one ?.

He comes from the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham where others who have committed similar crimes come from.  He is originally from Sudan. He drove around for hours in London, mainly around the Tottenham Court Road area. He was seen driving quite slowly towards Parliament Square.  It is thought that when he heard blues and twos behind him (it was an ambulance) he panicked and at the last minute decided to change direction and drive straight at the barrier taking out some cyclists who were in his way.

However you view this it was all a bit pathetic.  Clearly he had no plan, just a wannabe terrorist who hadn't got a clue how to do it.  Although Sparkbrook is an area known for terrorist cells, the police and MI5 say they have no knowledge of this man.
