Immigration police swooped at The Vision Condo on Pratumnak Hill yesterday to arrest a 31 year old Russian national who they say defrauded a Thai woman out of millions of baht.

Oleg Kabanov was taken to Khok Khram police station.

Police there received a complaint back in June 2017 from a 61 year old Thai woman who said she had been swindled in a call center scam.

Police allege that Kabanov posed as a Department of Special Investigations officer to defraud the victim who was persuaded to transfer money to many accounts as part of a bogus crime investigation.

She transferred a total of 4,363,160 baht to various accounts using a Bangkok Bank ATM at The Walk in Nawamin City Avenue in Bangkok.

Kabanov was using an account at the Krung Sri bank branch at Jomtien Beach. A warrant for his arrest was issued at the beginning of May.

He has been charged with fraud, making false representations and using fake documents through the internet.

Thai Rath reported that he was arrested by Chonburi immigration police in the car park of the condominium yesterday.

The most obvious silly question , how does a Russian pass for a Thai ? Putting aside visual differences , I seriously doubt he speaks fluent enough Thai to pass for a Thai DSI

This kind of scam only works because paying tea money to police is the only way to get them to investigate this type of crime.

If it was all done via internet, e-mails or LINE or something then it is possible to pretend to be anyone - including a Thai DSI officer.

Yeah, and his name doesn't even closely sound Thai. Even the blurred-out pictures show his coloring and build resembles Thai. Russia is a big country; there are Asian Russians and some may even learn to speak Thai.

Yes......it  is bit odd.

Somewhere along her lifeline she has accumulated a fair bit of money.

Which leads to the question , how can somebody so gullible come to be so wealthy in the first place ?
