Never met him so don't know.

I have and hope to be meeting up with him again. Talented guy.

There were also a couple a bad rumors about him when he promoted bars which didn't deserve it.

Obviously it's difficult to prove things like that. But I read a couple of his strange recommendations and it didn't inspire me to trust him and his advertisement which he pretends to be personal experience or research.

Definitely. It's a specialist audience he caters to.

55555...I see we have the old "hey Im not a monger or a teacher so Im superior"  glisten in the whistle.

One of the things about mongerers is that as they become more advanced, they wend their way deeper and deeper into the dark recesses (or even not so dark) of society. Thus, their advice on things like scams, places to go, food to eat, etc becomes more and more valuable.

Many expats here started off as mongerers. I started off as a mongerer. Listening to mongerers has allowed me, knock on wood, to never have a major problem in all my years in Thailand.

Sticks columns were invaluable for things like travel, hotels, resteraunts, transport etc. And it was practical stuff, not like on other more mainstream places where you would get advice on "hey dude, Ive got a guesthouse room on Khaosan road, do you know where the nearest Pizza Hut is"......

I assumed most people started off here as mongers!

And how many years in Thailand have you lived,  not how many years since you started visiting ?

I would suspect that apart from American GI's  in the 60s early 70s most , like myself  came here for work from the mid 70s onwards. But of course many on TV have either never stepped foot in Thailand or else only ever been occasional visitors.

Like Esso49, I was in BKK for the paycheck.

Complete with "hardship location" differential for working in Thailand.  I still chuckle about that, even though my contract has ended and they no longer mail my paycheck to Bangkok.  So I'm on my way back home...

Sure, unless you're retired or on holiday, most come here for work, myself included. But that doesn't preclude mongering!

pre·clude
prəˈklo͞od/
verb

  1. prevent from happening; make impossible.

    synonyms:

prevent, make it impossible for, rule out, stop, prohibit, debar, bar, hinder, impede, inhibit

I'd say you have it right.  But also there were many (not the tens of thousands that came late to the party))

that came here 30 plus years ago just for the adventure .  I know many that are still here......others have moved on .  We didn't use

the term mongers back then.....and the ladies were often right when they called us "hansum man"

as for stickman........the readers stories are an interesting read.    especially the first 5 years before all the repeats and

wanna be writers took over.

stick (not his real name)......i met about 10 years ago when he visited CM.   Nice guy.   I suspect he has not found a

lucrative substitute for his site.....and so is giving it another shot

How do I find Stickman's new column.  I don't see it obviously in Farang Pub.

It's nothing to do with this site.  Google "stickman bangkok" and it should be the top result.

Strick man is cool.  The only problem is the places he covers have gotten so greedy.  1200 for a barfine?  And the number of transvestites and Africans in those areas?  I think as a newbie, it would be a must read.....and even as a veteran, worth a look.....the tide can quickly change.  Some decent drink promos around there now..there are a few places at the Cowboy that are as good as any to grab a couple.of beers..even by Thai standards...I share a thought with him via email, occasionally..he is always respectful and interested.

My guess you're referring to an upstairs bar on patpong 2,  I think stick's endorsement was always for sale.

For years, I avoided Bradman's Bistro on Soi 23 because Stick endorsed them and they had a banner ad, so I just assumed the restaurant  must be crap. But I had a meal there recently and it was good.
