I haven't left Thailand since 2014 when I got my 5 year TE visa at Chaeng Wattana in Bangkok.

 

I think the 5 year option has only just been around long enough to test what happens in the last of the 5 years at this point. I'm in my 5th year now but I still haven't left. It would be interesting to hear any reports of travel during the final year of a 5 year TE membership.

 

I plan on testing it myself some time next year before my visa expires in the summer. I'll probably fly somewhere for a weekend and see if I can get an extra year out of it.

 

After that comes the decision about what to do next. I could buy another 5 year visa or maybe go for the 20 year option which wasn't available at the new cheaper price of 1 million Baht back in 2014.

 

A 5 year visa will cover me until I'm 50 but an extra 15 years for just another 500k is very tempting so I might just go with that option instead.

 

I do wonder if they will be in touch with some kind of special offer or incentives to renew prior to my membership expiry.

 

For the Thailand Elite marketing guys who will quite possibly be reading this thread I would suggest that offering people who have expiring 5 year visas a discount on an upgrade to the cheaper 20 year for 1 million Baht visa would be a way to ensure I went for the more expensive option, especially if it was for say 750k Baht.....that would definitely influence which option I go for next time around.

 

A discount on the 2 million baht version would be useless to me as I have never used any of the associated services which come with the visa ?

If the Thai government decides to just shut down Thai Elite then what? When your 5 year visa expires you won't get a new one even if you paid for 20 years. The chance for this to happen might be very small, but it's definitely not zero ?

Sounds good to me, I will be doing this some time before next summer.

Must be a nice feeling to be able to fork over 30K US for a visa.  Since i am not wealthy it is hard for me to understand. 

If I forked over 30K for a Visa here I would not be about to sleep for the next 20 years haha. I guess wealthy people have no worries about it.

If you check the prices for a decent car and a good pickup, both new... then the difference for a decent visa...

I can live with a normal pickup... a car looses more value then the visa imo

2013 was a change in the scheme when different levels of membership were first introduced.

It maybe be better to post fact rather than fiction. Your visa is already paid for. The only thing that could be possibly stopped/changed in your event of things could be the 'Perks' of the membership. Cars, Spas, Golf etc.
Considering it's a world wide programme, road shows promoting the visa in country's all over the world, members spending millions of baht on membership etc If it ever was stopped, I would hate to see what would happen to those spending 1900 baht on an extension.
Then again, there are always thoughs that cannot afford the privilege of having the visa BUT make excuses not too buy it to make themselves feel better!

I cant comment on marriage extensions but my retirement extension gets quicker to obtain every year. And as I own my own condo in Jomtien I am not affected by the away-from-home reporting requirement either. The 90-day report can be done online or by post, but as immigration is just a few minutes' walk from my condo I can easily do it myself. At Jomtien there is rarely any queue at all for this.

 

The re-entry permit is slightly irritating - it could easily just be an optional part of the extension - but it only took me about 20 minutes to get mine this year. You can do it at BKK airport also.

 

I dont think that 1MB for a visa stamp is a bargain at all and if I had to pay 1MB for mine I would probably look for somewhere more welcoming to move to.

I've been a member since 2007 and am currently on a 3rd 5 year Visa (of the 1MB lifetime membership which was being offered at the onset). 

 

There was a 'rough patch' whereby the future of the TE program was in question. However, legalities (and potential legal action) ensured that the 'incoming'  Thai Government was legally obliged to grandfather in the Visa and perks for existing members, it was potentially too costly not to. Consequently, revamping the program, making it more accessible was a smarter business move ensuing longevity. 

 

Thus, the Thai Elite Program has survived the volatile political turmoil and consequent targeting of a program championed by previous political enemies. The only way I could see this as being possible is that someone purchases the T.E. Visa for their first entry and never returns to Thailand.... 10-1 you didn't really think your comment though.

There you have it... two polarizing aspects of the same discussion... Some see value where others see waste. 

 

No one is wrong, we just all value things differently and in doing so fail to see the validity of differing opinions and thus question the motives of others who disagree. 

 

I think its fairly obvious by now that there is a whole spectrum of folk who have chosen the T.E. Membership for convenience or necessity. Equally so there are others who value their money either out of necessity or they don't quite see the convenience or have need of the T.E. Visa.

Sooner or later your extension won't be easy and it seems quite stupid to say that you would be somewhere else if you had to spend 1 MB for a visa: first I do not think that you would find anywhere better, and second, it means that you are here because you are not able to be somewhere else. Sad life.

 

Anyway if you are not even able to pay for a multi re-entry permit when you do your extension, it means that you really don't have lots of choices !

You should try to be a bit more realistic about yourself and your life...
