Fish spa owner plunges his head in - says foreign media are just out to discredit Thailand

The owner of hundreds of fish spas nationwide has lashed out at an Australian woman and the foreign media for discrediting Thailand.

And to prove that his spas are clean he has plunged his head into a tank of fish normally reserved for tourists' feet.

The actions of Chaiyaporn Lojaya come in the wake of the Aussie's claims in UK media that she lost her toes due to an infection picked up in Thailand at a fish spa.

It was eight years ago.

Chaiyaporn - owner of Bangkok Dr Fish Spa 99 that has 300 branches throughout Thailand - was at his Chiang Mai Night Bazaar location for the publicity stunt.

He slammed the foreign media and the woman for having a go at Thailand. He claims his spas are sanitary, properly run and have the necessary public health licenses.

Sanook even used the English word "discredit" transliterated into Thai in their headline.

However, Chaiyaporn did say that he felt the economic impact on the business would only be temporary.

Thaivisa notes that putting your head in a place normally reserved for feet in Thailand would shock Thais but is unlikely to have the same effect on people abroad.

That may impress the average Thai who has an ingrained cultural aversion for their head coming anywhere near someone else's feet - however, foreigners will simply shake their heads an laugh at the funny man.  It would be hilarious if he ended up with pink eye and and a sinus infection from that stunt though.  ?  Actually he should have drank the water to prove it's purity - now that would totally gross out the average bacteria-adverse farang!  :clap2:
"Omg! He drank the water the fish swim and poop in?  Gawd! It really must be pure!!!"

Would need to deep cut his head with a knife before submersion to prove the point.

the eyes, ears, mouth and stomach have protective mechanisms that kill bacteria. It's not the same as exposure from an open wound.

Oooooh...you and your facts!

I'm not a research scientist, but shouldn't both variables be exposed to the identical time frame?

Comparing a 10 second dip to a 10 minute soak is not an accurate comparison. He needs to retest his theory one more time...

These fish tanks are a scam. They  offer no benefits to the users. The only people who profit are those who tout this nonsense. The  complainant can not provide one published report or study in a respectable scientific journal that supports the use of these unsanitary  water tanks.

Does it really matter?

These tanks are fun. People go on holiday to do something different. Putting your feet in a tank full of fish that nibble at your toes is FUN something you don't do at home.

Don't over think everything.
