PETCHABUN, 19 September 2018 (NNT) – The Thai Cabinet has given approval to transport and logistics development plans for the lower north and upper northeastern regions, including a plan to improve airports in four provinces in anticipation of increased tourism.

Following the Cabinet Retreat in Petchabun, Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd made it known that various proposals, submitted by provinces of Lower Northern Region 1 and Upper Northeastern Region 1, were considered.

All of the proposals were in line with the government’s strategies for development, especially with its plans to develop transport and logistics in support of Special Economic Zones (SEZ). Highways 12, 21, 201, the second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, the 5th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge and dual rail projects between Pak Nam Pho-Denchai and Khon Kaen-Nong Khai were all approved for further study and development.

In agriculture, the Cabinet approved further development for the innovation of harvested fruit storage, tasking the Ministry of Science and Technology with looking into processing of fruits and the Ministry of Commerce with their sale.

On quality of life, the Cabinet pressed that construction on Petchabun Hospital’s surgical ward and outpatient building, as well as Lom Sak Hospital’s emergency response center, be stepped up, calling for them to be included in the 2020 financial plan.

For tourism, the Cabinet commissioned a study into enhancing safe agricultural tourism and approved infrastructure development to accommodate visitors to the Sukhothai World Heritage Park. Consideration is also to be given to making Petchabun a world geological park.

The Cabinet decided not to discuss the issue of a cable car for Phu Kradueng National Park yet, indicating that it must be considered by several more agencies first.

The administration later gave its approval to the draft Sustainable Agriculture Support and Development Act, which would see the government supporting eco-friendly farming, from planting to processing, as well as marketing. It would mandate that at least three percent of the nation’s crops, or about 800,000 hectares, be sustainable in the next five years.

Approval was also given to the returning of Value Added Tax payments to low-income earners. The Ministry of Finance will have to attach POS add-ons to the EDC machines installed at the over 30,000 Blue Flag stores participating in the welfare card scheme so that they will be able to separate out the VAT cost of goods. The system will be trialed from this November 1 to April 2019.

Perhaps populist, politically motivated, election timed, or whatever you want to call them these are good projects that are beneficial. Don't see any white elephants in that list which is something positive.
