Iran will defeat Trump just like it did Saddam, won't abandon missiles -Rouhani

DUBAI (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will fail in his confrontation with Iran, just like Iraq's Saddam Hussein, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday, referring to the war between the two Middle Eastern powers and vowing that Tehran will not abandon its missiles.

Tensions have ramped up between Iran and the United States after Trump withdrew from a landmark multilateral nuclear deal in May and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic last month.

As Rouhani spoke, Iran began displaying its naval power in the Gulf during annual parades in the capital Tehran and the port of Bandar Abbas on the Gulf marking the start of the country’s 1980-88 war with Iraq.

Iran has suggested in recent weeks that it could take military action in the Gulf to block other countries’ oil exports in retaliation for U.S. sanctions intended to halt its sales of crude.

Washington maintains a fleet in the Gulf that protects oil shipping routes.

"The same will happen to Trump. America will suffer the same fate as Saddam Hussein," Rouhani said in a speech carried live by state television.

"Iran will not abandon its defensive weapons ... including its missiles that make America so angry," Rouhani said.

State media said about 600 vessels took part in the Gulf naval drill on Saturday, a day after Iran held aerial exercises in the waterway, vowing that a "pounding reply" awaited the country's enemies.

As I recall, that's a lot like what Saddam said just before they chased him into a spider hole...

True,

However,  I also thought Iraq came off better in the Iran-Iraq war?

Whatever, they will have their work cut out well and truly if they take on the West.

There are a zillion reasons why it would be stupid to attack Iran.  Military might isn't one of them.  Or, at least it's in the bottom 5% of those zillion reasons.

That's why the western World should switch as soon and as much as possible to alternatives of fossil oil and gas. A LOT cheaper, and less own damage when oil revenu bring the Ayatollays, Maduro, Putin and the Sheiks on their knees ( = regime change)

And you think for one moment they are concerned what the US can do ? Doubt it even with the US allies, Isrealis looking for a bloodbath. They should look over their shoulder with Russia already in Syria with an intelligent Commander in Chief, rather than a womanising buffoon.

Russia is not a friend of Iran and would be in no hurry to assist besides selling outdated weaponry.

Syria is another matter as Russia has a base there . Eliminating or hurting another oil supplier only benefits Russia ?

The situation was quite different. Saddam's regime was not supported by his people. His regime was clerical, while actually dominated by Sunni muslims, and the Shia majority of the population was against him.

If the US attacks Iran, it will be a holy war for Shia Muslims. On top of it, the Shia religion has been build on the concept of martyrdom, so many guys are ready to die for their religion, like Ali and Hussein did in the past.

Of course, the USA could technically win the war as they have the power to destroy most heavy weaponry. But then it will become like Afghanistan at 10x scale, with candidates for martyrdom at every street's corner.

Is that why so many Iranians run away from Iran or often hold anti gov rallies which of course get squashed.

a few months ago I met an old ex-pilot. He was an F4-E 'knuck' and except for the accent he reflected just what you expect to hear from a Vietnam pilot...

He was of the Pre-Revol.Islamic Guad genre  (worked under the Shah)

he was a 'club' memebr of the numbers of dudes who lived thru Ejecting out of a Phantom at low level

It will be like Afghanistan if the US is stupid enough to invade.  Bomb the hell out of them and then let them figure out how to recover on their own.  The US keeps being dumb trying to establish "democracies" in these countries.  Just wipe out their military and leave.

Still, they go praying 5 times a day. Nothing's better than a holy war to reunite people.

Don't forget that's how they were able to repell the Iraki invasion. Despite the fact that Saddam was supported by the USA, France, and most arab states (i.e. Saudi Arabia, the Emirates...), while Iran was isolated. They were able to resist mainly because they were more ready to die than the Irakis.

It was even more dumb (or hypocritical) as there were no weapons of mass destruction and Irak had not been at all involved in the Twin Towers attack, while Saudi Arabia was.
