Previously I had a program called mkvtoolnix for merging sub's with a movie and accidentally deleted it. Now when I try to reinstall it, it says download successful but I can't actually open the program. When I hit Open it just takes me back to the download menu again. Before when I DL,d it automatically installed a desktop icon but not this time. What am I doing wrong?

Did you delete the program or just the shortcut?

Look for it in Programs it might still be there.

If that does not work delete the program properly and reinstall it again.

If you have any registry cleaners like CCleaner you could run that before a new install just to get rid of any leftovers that might be giving you the problem.

Thank, but I did uninstall it as well.

Downloaded the 64 bit latest version, also tried 32 bit, nothing seems to work.

I just had a look at that web page.

Download the installer mkvtoolnix-64-bit-27.0.0-setup.exe i.e. to the download directory on your PC. After it is downloaded double-click on the file to start the installation.

You might have to confirm some messages like i.e. security.

If this does not work then I suggest you describe exactly what you did and exactly at which stage "nothing seems to work". Do you get a message or just nothing happens or what happens?

I get a message download and setup successful, but the program won't open.

Does seem like there are some leftovers from the original install.

Delete the program again, and anything you can find associated with it and do a computer reboot to see if that works.

There is a great little free program call "Search Everything" that does a much better job of finding stuff than the search function that comes with M$, give that a try to clear out any leftovers.  http://www.voidtools.com/

I'll try a reboot.

Iobit uninstaller (free) also works well to rid of hard to access leftovers when deleting a programme.

Also, sometimes one has to disable the antivirus whilst downloading some programmes.

When I installed it originally I never had a problem, never disabled anything, virus protection, adblock, nothing. When it asks me to run the program should I use "run as administrator" or just "open"? Have tried both, result is the same, says "set up is successful".

You could try clicking on file location or properties to get a better idea of what is going on?

Is there a program to REMOVE subs from a movie?

Drag and drop your file into the source file box. This will show any audio or sub files. Just untick the ones you don't want.

Choose an output location and hit the "start multiplexing" button.

Unfortunately Hard Coded Subs cannot be removed.

Just out of curiosity why would you want a separate program to merge subs?

Subs usually come as a .srt files that you just put in the same folder as the movie then you have the choice of showing the subs or not.

I had a quick look at the download site you used - https://qpdownload.com/mkvtoolnix/  - But after refusing several of their "free" offers and then still having to download extra stuff to get the actual program I gave up , didn't want to clutter up my computer with useless bloatware and useless junk.

Luckily I had used the tracing option on Revo Uninstaller so was able to delete everything of that program without problem.

Merging the subs with the movie seems to be the only way I get them to work. Tried putting the subs in the same folder and never had any success, don't know why.  I never got any "free" offers with my new download, just the program itself.

Mmmm! OK!

The thing is that the movie file and the sub must have exactly the same name.

Create a folder with the movie title so you know what it is. Then get the movie and the sub file and give them exactly the same name, example My Movie.avi and My Movie.srt.

The file type will be different but as long as the name is the same it will work. Put the two files in your movie folder and there you go.

I'll give it another try. Using mkvtoolnix to merge subs and movie is pretty quick, only a few seconds, then no need to create a folder, change names etc.

Fair enough if it works for you why change

I do all mine the "long way" because I know for sure .srt subs work on the Samsung Smart TV.

Some subs will work on the VLCPlayer on the computer but not on the TV.
