Customs duties when Importing items from overseas has always been somewhat confusing.

Just a note:  I see this (below) on several off-shore buying sites and on domestic sites

when you purchase or are considering purchase and shipping.  Is this the new normal?

In Thai it just says you might have to pay import duties, it doesn’t say ‘high custom fee’. Sounds like they’re just trying to help their customers avoid paying import duties.

I agree with Mark.  All I read it to say is that you should be prepared to pay duty (and VAT).  It is a little clearer in the Thai.    The warning is probably because of the complaints from a lot of people because they don't realize the duty is based on the item price and shipping costs.  And that there likely will be VAT add on top.

If it is shipped by DHL or FedEX, say, your shipping cost for a single item will be higher than, say, Central Dept Store's cost per item in a 10,000 lot shipment.  So you buy on line from overseas and pay more than buying locally.
