So I just returned from the US last week to my condo overlooking the river.  Finally, felt like hitting the town.  Got a birthday coming up and an extra 400K THB in my wallet, as parents want to give away money before death.  Cleaned up my place, thinking a possible guest for the night. 

 

Arrived Sukhumvit about 7 pm.  Quite possibly my last trip ever to the area.  It isn't that something bad happened, it is more like absolutely nothing good happened.  It really made me homesick...for a decent place to do a few beers and meet some decent people.  Not even looking for a superstar..a nice middle aged single mom, who doesn't pick her nose in public and can do some light housework would be fine. 

The heat and traffic were unusually bad..well no kidding, I am used to it, grew up in DC and the traffic is like BKK without the motorbikes and people going to 711 in their pajamas.  I just wanted to start with a decent happy hour, as it takes me about five or six smalls to get rolling. 

 

Walked down SOI 4, nothing looked near tempting.  A few sausage parties, several transvestite reviews..but zero places with decent beer pricing (I don't even bother with booze, here).  Then, I actually walked into NEP.  Security was welcoming, as they are probably bored to death.  The place was somewhat clean and neat, compared to years passed.  But, not one single, solitary promo for beers.  It is like they are colluding on prices and discouraged from lowering them...ever.  Turned around and walked out. 

 

Walked to Asoke and back..did a few Heinekens at various 711, and had to bail.  I did have one less than memorable 80 THB small beer on SOI 7\1, but gee whiz, if you are in the sex business, you at least need some sexy girls (or even grandmas).  Hopped on the 2 bus, which took me to KSR, on my way home, and I won't even start on that...but 711 sell warm beers, so you will buy from the vendors out front at double price..so you can't even brown bag.  Jumped on the other bus and went home. 

 

Pissed twice the whole time I was gone.  The only bright spots being a couple of good places I spotted on the way home.  I can't imagine people taking long trips to indulge on Sukhumvit, although I did it years ago, and I honestly don't think it is me that changed.  I still love a good happy hour, drink less now, and have a lot more money, and stay in decent shape, complete with teeth, hair, and clean clothes.  It is a crying shame.  I know their rents are high, but the whole thing should have been moved years ago..good for Cheap Charlie's that they moved to On Nut...and that wasn't anywhere near the top of my lists for places to grab a beer...but it sure did beat the heck out of what is there now.

I think you’ve changed.  I’ve lived in lower Sukhumvit for 6 years and love it.  First visited in 1992, It’s different now, no better or worse.  You have to know the good places to go.

I fully understand where you are coming from, and regardless what others have said; it is not you that has changed.

 

The adult entertainment scene in Thailand has become much more commercialised and whereas some years ago there was more and better value, social has become one of the most expensive avocations in the country. The police have clamped down on a lot of it, the industry has become greedy and they have whacked up prices due to supply and demand.

 

This really hits home for those of us that remember better times.

Most people have moved on from that .

Go-go bars with prostitutes is old fashioned these days

Maybe things have changed. I do not know, as I am not and "out and about" type lad.
I rather like Bully's Pub around Soi 2,3. I think they do a great burger, and the Happy Hour is good in my memory, though I do not mind paying a little extra for a pint of better brew.
I would have to agree with some of the other posters. Loosen up a little and enjoy your birthday, for Pete's sake, unless you are such a cheap Charlie that spending five baht breaks your heart. ????
Off the subject a bit, but people often refer to Sukhumvit as though it is some unique destination. I live about 150 meters off of Sukhumvit in Bang Sare. Isn't it a bit like saying "There are no good bars left on Main Street."?

This is not solely about prostitutes. In the past I used to frequent bars that had music, drinks and pretty girls that were there to draw in male customers as eye candy. The options were there to take the girls out, but on most occasions us lads used to just enjoy the bar atmosphere, have a few laughs over some drinks and with the girls. This now has become much more Commercialised, these places becoming pushy for drinks, the atmosphere of these bars being toned down and way, way over the top price wise. I have not visited a beerbar for years, total rip-offs and no longer value for money. As simple as that. 

You’ll have a great time if you have a good attitude.  Maybe the OP missed that this time around?  Bars have always been commercialized and pushy for drinks.

That's what I meant , the whole prostitution scene has died , not just the actual paid for sex , but the whole bargirl scene .

   If you want to have sex , you just go online, choose which girl you want , agree a price and for what services , book her for the set length of time and agree a on a time .

   Its much easier these days

Again you are applying prostitution to the social scene. I`ve already explained that having a social night out can still be enjoyable without prostitutes being a part of it. I`ve already explained why and can`t be bothered going into further detail because you`re slow on the uptake.

Several years ago in Chiang Mai, the bar scene was booming. In those bars a group of us lads used to meet once a week. We would drink vodka and limes, beers, watch the pretty girls prancing about on a stage, and pretty girls would sit next to us, we would buy them drinks and some great laughs to be had. We were just out for good times and socialising. There were girls there that could be barfined and some that would not go out with customers, only there as hostesses. Most of us only went for the drinks and social and the bar type atmosphere as did many other of my friends at the time. That was it basically. After a few hours and several drinks into the evening, most of us were too drunk to go with girls anyway. But it was fun, not over expensive and many of those bars stayed open to the very late hours.

 

So this wasn`t about socialising with prostitutes, even if many of the girls were prostitutes. If not sure of my meaning, would you like me to draw you a diagram?
