Voip Blocking

Featured Replies

Which ISPs in Thailand do *not* block SIP/VoIP phones? Thanks :-)

I have used Skype for a long time now and my ISP is True

Do any block Skype? If they do then l can't recall seeing any complaints. As long as you have a fast connection you should be right. Even downloading music and movies doesn't sem to get blocked unless you go overboard.

Skype needs about 40-50kb/s so should work on dial up.

That increases to 120-130kb/s if you transmit video as well.

Some ISPs try to block the SIP protocol used for most VoIP (though not Skype, it uses its own proprietary protocol, which incidentally is much harder to block) e.g. by blocking traffic from port 5060. So on my current connection I cannot receive calls from my VoIP provider, although I can make them. Some ISPs do not block VoIP but limit the quality of service for those packets (read: sabotage them), mainly because they have a rival VoIP offering they want you to use instead.

It's a terrible practice that needs to end. It's not only in Thailand, also ISPs in the US do this.
