PM meets with young scientists to discuss national development

 

 

BANGKOK, 1 November 2018 (NNT) - Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha met with 500 young scientists to discuss collaboration in research for national development agendas. 

The new scientists are participating in a campaign for science-led national development. They said Thailand’s strength lies in its biodiversity, unique culture and way of life, along with natural environments that accommodate research and innovation. 

However, inadequate support for the sciences has cost the country valuable personnel. The group asked that the government pledge its support for scientists, while identifying four high-potential areas for research -- food, public health, energy and security. 

Gen Prayut said scientists will be a key driver of Thailand’s development over the next 20 years. He called on old and new scientists to work together to identify goals and produce research that meets the country’s commercial and environmental needs. Most importantly, they must learn from the country’s past mistakes, in order to escape poverty and avoid social conflict.

Most of Thailand’s past are military governments. They created poverty to maintain their dominance and instigated social conflicts to stay in power. I hope Thailand learn those lessons.

With what to do what ?  There isn't the resources.  Other countries invite foreigner entrepreneurs and tech workers.  When was the last time the Thai government made you feel welcomed ?  US Tech firms rely heavily on foreign help.  Where is Thailand's Elon Musk?  Slurs and bad behavior aside.  He did start Paypal.  The xenophobic nationalism is not going to make Thailand competitive, just the opposite is going to happen,  The article delicately pointed out that the grand hooha is just blowing smoke.  If you are motivated, leave Thailand.  Find a place that wants idea and problems solved, because all you will get in Thailand is TALK.

I believe the plan is to present the image that he will be committed to the sciences in hopes to persuade the educated youth to support him with the expectation that the rest of the younger population will follow their lead.

I am at a loss to understand how a unique culture helps fuel scientific advancement.  If anything, cultural moorings retard development because sacred oxen are always at risk of being gored.  

 

And where are these "natural environments that accommodate research and innovation"?  

 

Of course, research isn't going anywhere until STEM students in the university's graduate department can read and comprehend current research, which is almost all in English.

 

Lots of hurdles there.
