Chiang Mai News reported on a meeting chaired by the secretary of the Committee on Narcotics Control who revealed the extent of drug taking among young people in Thailand.

Niyom Termsrisuk was presenting strategies for the upcoming year in the war against drugs.

He said that 300,000 Thai people need drug rehabilitation. Of these 80% are drug users under the age of 24.

The main thrust of the anti-drug initiative is to stop the flow of drugs from Thailand's immediate land neighbors.

Inter-country cooperation needs to be stepped up to stop the flow of drugs, said Niyom.

Simply legalize drugs, then no problem - new normal. (nobody see, nobody know).

They've a good start with alcohol, tobacco and a plethora of addictive and maybe even destructive prescription drugs so why stop there? /sarc  :stoner:

Conscript them into the army.

A few years of polishing the General’s watches, doing Mrs. General’s laundry, getting beaten and kissing butt will thoroughly rehabilitate these rascally youths and turn them into model citizens.

Problem solved.

It mostly all comes from areas of Burma held and ruled by the Wa State Army, not the Burmese military or government. The Thais know where the factories are and who runs them. Nothing to stop the Thais carrying out a few surprise air-strikes and production would be seriously dented. Not as if the Wa State Army is going to declare war on Thailand. Obviously, however, the reason nothing is really done (apart from a small % of busts presented for the media) is that there are too many people in positions of power with vested interests in keeping the status quo due to the vast amounts of money involved.

The trouble is the precursors for  the  meth manufacture in  the Myanmar labs are being supplied by the Chinese (similar to the fentanyl problem in North America, which has resulted in numerous deaths) So, unless the Thais are prepared to take on the Chinese (when they're not wooing them for tourism) bombing the Wa wouldn't fix the problem. As long as the Wa have an unending supply of the raw materials you'll never stop this money train.

Have to say that the Chinese are at the root of many a problem and need calling out on lots of issues...just that no-one (even the lefties) has the balls to do it because they are terrified of the economic penalties. Bad that it has got to that point but I guess money trounces principles every time these days.

That is a commendable idea and the authorities should concentrate their efforts doing just that -stopping the flow of 'hard' drugs such as methamphetamine at there source.

But no doubt they will concentrate to throwing a few hundred thousand Thai citizens in jail and stigmatizing their lives because they put something in their bodies to make themselves feel good.

I'll never understand why those who are 'leaders', which are basically rich people who have bought power, wish to rule with iron fists and smash all citizens who use drugs to escapes the toils of suffering.  Instead, these 'leaders' are the proximate cause of untold suffering.

For those that don't see the sarcasm, you can't legalize methamphetamine. That is idiocy.

Weed or natural substances one thing. All drugs, a big nope

What about a drug pledging scheme, can always bring back Yingluck to get things organized.

The last time the shinawatras got involved in tackling the drugs problem, it did not end well for thousands of people.

Then the drug problems will continue.

as they have for the last 50 years.

Cant try anything different.   just keep going down the same silly old road.
