Plain cigarette packaging to be introduced to discourage smoking

 

 

Cigarette packaging in the near future will be plain and much less attractive under a new regulation approved by the National Tobacco Products Control Committee.

 

Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsattayathorn said Wednesday that the plain packaging would replace the current packaging which has been used for more than five years and has become familiar with smokers and non-smokers alike to the extent that it is no longer effective in discouraging people from smoking or making people realize health threats from cigarette smoking.

 

In accordance with the new regulation, he said that the plain packaging will be standard and to be applied to all brands of cigarette.

Sometimes the logic in this country is mind boggling. If the sole reason for phasing out current cigarette packaging is that "smokers and non-smokers alike" have familiar with it, would it be too far-fetched for the minister to assume that plain packaging eventually also will become familiar, thus losing its effectiveness just as much as current packaging? So what sort of packaging is he going to introduce in another five years? In my opinion, smokers don't really care whether their cigarettes come in brightly colored packaging, plain packaging, or, for that matter, in a brown paper bag as long as they can be smoked.

Because plain packets will mean that you won't know what's inside, no, that won't work, hold on, plain packets will mean that, hold on, let me think about this for a while and I'll get back to you.

all these agencies in Thailand and yet they have the most dangerous and fatal roads on the planet, are they not seeing the obvious

 

and tourist safety doesn't have a great record either

Maybe its some kind of reverse psychology.

This lot laugh at the evening news when someone's head is rolling down the road after an accident, blood and gore fest,    oh its so funny,  do it again,  do it again, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The nasty pictures on the front don't work as well. ( just more to laugh at )

So maybe plain packaging will work !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Plain packets will cut costs and this will be passed on to the smokers.????????

Should make it cheaper to make the plain packs, can we expect lower cigarette price now?

Great minds think alike. ????????

Considering that most smokers smoke because of successful PR and branding (not because of the taste) that makes smokers associate smoking with positive emotions (freedom, success, socialising, wealth, youth, beauty, being "in")

May be not so bad. It reverses PR psychology by using a -say- neutral package not a brand symbol anymore.

 

But then - why not reverse the successful campaings of the tobacco companies by associating smoking with being a looser, being a failure, being poor, being low so, being easy to manipulate...

The masculine cowboy, on the horse NOT smoking, the smoking looser sitting on the ground, looking unhappy, and not healthy ...

Loss of face,  shaming,  saying they are bad people.

all never done here.

One of the reasons road deaths go up not down here.

Please print these warnings on all plastics as well...my neighbours seem to be addicted to the smell of burning plastic and even give us free smoke every day.

As normal; reporting is not very clear that this is a change to the non medical photo anti-smoking area of pack to remove brand names/logos - an idea that is the norme in almost a dozen countries but Thailand will be the first in ASIA.  The medical scare photos will remain but likely will be changed to new versions for better impact.  They are not talking about having a plain brown bag.   

Surely, already shops selling cigarettes have to cover the front of each cigarette shelf with white/plain covering, to prevent the cigarette packets being seen?

Once they have been purchased, I'm not sure what effect changing the packet covering will have on anyone?

You obviously with not be able to claim your place without a display of your top brand logo - brands did call to us.

I was taking specifically about changing the packets from gory pictures to plain packaging.

Or was that on the packet? I assumed it was a poster ad or something similar? I've never been a smoker.

 

I think the only cigarette joke I can remember was the guy who had a dog with no legs, called Woodbine, because he used to take it out for a drag.

Disagree. Different brands can be very different.

Once I was given a load of Chinese cigs from a couple of Chinese contractor managers.

99% of them I had to give away. Probably the roughest things I've ever tried. Most people I gave them to admitted later they binned them or gave them away.

We should go back in time, when advertising was truthful ????

 

I think a very smart move by the Thais.. Was first implemented by Australia with lawsuit threats from the tobacco monopolies, now another 10 countries have followed, latest being Mauritius.. But usually Thailand is very stubborn to any Western influence.. 

 

Hopefully a first step, and looking at other Western countries strategies to other issues including road rule reforms to get Thailand off no. 1 position for road fatalities worldwide.. Democratic elections etc.. But TIT, wishful thinking..

The governement did this overhere too.

 

After a few weeks the Tobacco shops did sell colourfull covers for the boxes so nobody could see those pics anymore.

 

So then they had to make a new law to forbid selling the cover boxes.

So this buying here does sound like a scam. " Hello Somchai , 20 plains please "   What would I get , would the prices reflect what the filling is in the ciggy ? Dunhill or Dunghill ?

Stopped the smoking more than 30 years ago but suspect they mean all names will be in the same plain font type - am sure there will still be brands but just no logos or designer fonts.  But someone from a country now using this system should be able to answer?

They should place something inside the cigarette that instantly kills off the person when they inhale a cigarette. Then once all those smokers all die then there won't be anymore smoking ????????
