Bangkok Insight reported on the results of a ministerial level meeting yesterday where the green light was given for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to take a greater role in the organisation of the Chatuchak Weekend market.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  has been signed by the BMA and the State Railways after disagreements over the collection of rents from stall stallholders.

This will see stallholders paying just 1,800 baht per month to the BMA instead of 3,157 baht to the State Railways. In turn the BMA will pay the railways 169 million baht annually.

By 2028 the agreement will see the BMA assume full control of the market.

Anything that can be done to help and sustain Chatuchak market is a good thing. It is a Bangkok landmark, and an astounding marketplace. And tens of thousands earn a livelihood from that area.

Go visit the ortorkor fruitmarket where they all scam foreigners by asking them tripled prices.

And on chatuchak they should close the road so we can walk there safely on wednesday and thursday.

There were thriving markets all over Bangkok where tens of thousands earned a livelihood - until 2014.

We're from the government and we're here to help.

Yes BMA will do for JJ market what they did for Khaosan and the flooding of Bangkok.

JJ is so big it is hard to remember where you bought something.  Bought the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn there for B500.  Could not for the life of me find that stall ever again.  You have to get there early Saturday before the hordes of people show up.

considering the railways were talking about closing JJ's down at one stage this is good news, there are few markets that even come close to this one. Have to agree though trying to find a certain shop can be extremely frustrating with all the little walk throughs around the market, I tend to go to JJ mall a lot more these days then the outside market as it is a bit easier and air conditioned.
