In cannabis culture, "420" is slang for cannabis consumption, particularly around the time 4:20 p.m. (16:20). It also refers to cannabis-related celebrations held annually on April 20 (4/20 in the US). The term has evolved from a code among a group of high school students to a widespread cultural phenomenon.

And whilst we are straining our memories, does anyone else remember the ITV Public Information Film (it would appear that the actual footage is lost) that featured this poem?
