A welfare card holder shows a 500-baht note Wednesday in front of Krung Thai ATMs in Prachin Buri province.

BANGKOK — Defending the military government’s handing out of 500-baht cash stipends to welfare card recipients, one of its ministers – who also helps lead a pro-junta political party – said Thursday that Thailand’s poorest are in dire need of help.

Suvit Maesincee, minister of science and technology and deputy leader of the Palang Pracharat Party, said the poor are starving to death and should benefit from continued support for programs introduced by his government, such as its controversial welfare card program.

And this, after the Junta claims to have helped the poor since it burst onto the scene, going on 5 years ago. And they even dared to use the words 'equal opportunity' too. The sooner this pathetic bunch burst off the scene, the better.

Translation = The caring and compassionate Junta wants to provide a bright future of unlimited handouts....but you need to vote for them first.

No they are not.  Khun Suvit should get out to rural Thailand sometime.  No one is going hungry out here.  Food is dirt cheap and readily available.  City dwellers?  Honestly, if your that poor, why stay in the city where it's significantly more expensive to live.

Some of the richest people in the world control everything in Thailand yet millions are in abject poverty which speaks volumes of the priorities of those in power.

Correction, the richest 1% of people world wide control everything in the world, not just Thailand. Opinions can be manipulated by the mainstream media, the stock market can be run down temporarily if you aren't good boys and girls, housing can be made to be extremely expensive to keep you on the leash as can employment. Let us not kid ourselves, democracy is just a good idea but like communism it never got a chance to stand up.

IIRC anyone can get fed at a wat in Thailand but they have to wait until after the monks eat their one meal of the day, usually around midday.

In addition, it is sometimes possible to stay at the wat in the long term, but you will have to work around there to earn your keep.

thailand is an export country and it has a trade surplus of around 50 billion dollars in the last 3 years!

there are more than 100 billion dollars in the treasury. it is doing well in terms of economy both in micro and macro levels.

and yet, poor gets a mere 500 baht - 15 USD!!!  cash stipend where you need to spend a 100 baht to reach the closest ATM from your small village!!

what a joke!!! give these poor some more!

This is a shame for Thailand imo. let the old people spend hours to get their 500 baht, waiting in the queues! they can very well do a lot better in terms of supporting poor and low income people!

Instead of supporting the poor and low income more, they spend the money to make the rich (rich Chinese origin Thai citizens usually while real Thai people are being exploited) richer and support their multi billion projects, give them nonsense loans etc! definitely not fair.
