Rare leatherback turtle seen laying eggs on Phang Nga beach

In a rare phenomenon, a large leatherback turtle was spotted laying eggs on a beach in Phang Nga’s Takua Pa district on Monday morning.
 

Krissana Sae-lim, managing director of the Khao Lak Orchid Beach Resort Hotel in Tambon Kuek Khak, alerted the Eighth Marine and Coastal Resource Management Office that the turtle was seen laying eggs on the beach in front of her hotel.

 

She said her hotel staff and volunteers protecting the marine resources and officials of Tambon Kuek Khak administration spotted the turtle coming up from the sea to lay eggs and leaving.

 

The turtle was about 125 centimetres long and 70 centimetres wide.

 

Officials cordoned off the nest for officials of the marine resources management office to collect for later hatching and nursing.

 

Krissana said the sighting of the leatherback turtle laying eggs brought joy because such a scene has not been seen for over a decade.

 

Prathom Rassamee, director of the marine resources management office, said the sighting was a evidence that the environment in Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea is rebounding.

 

Prathom said leatherback turtles were rarely seen laying eggs after the 2004 tsunami. The leatherback species is believed to be on the brink of extinction worldwide.

Great news but keep the Chinese away - they may be after mock turtle soup!!

It is not a sign of recovery at all.  This turtle finally decided to go back to her egg laying place after a long time away. Doesn't indicate that the environment is recovering. Need a lot more proof. But its a nice sign

 

I'm surprise that it hasn't been eaten yet.

If the hotel has any sense, they'll have cordoned that area off, posted a guard and marketed this as a tourist attraction.  But TIT, so probably not.
